as far as i know the problem with the sp 12 is that you can't get your own drum sounds - please correct me if i am wrong - and you can't get rid of the build in sounds.

There are 4 banks on the sp.
on the 12, 3 of them are filled up with internal sounds (taken from the emu drumulator), and a 4th one for your own samples. however, you can sample over the individual sounds. so that means that you can store 32 samples, just like the 1200.
From what ive read, Emu disgarded the internal samples when creating the 1200, so it could have more sample time.
and nym, ive never seen the 1200's gui. but id assume its the same, considering its the same machine with the same functions.

i had the mpc 60 and got the sp 1200 instead and i don't regret it at all. the sp 1200 sounds so much better then the mpc 60. the 60 had good midrange thump, but its not nearly as gritty as the sp 1200.
dxarmy.com/sp1200 is the sp forum site
the sp1200 doesn't really have a graphical user interface. it has a mixer , tuninng, and decay section but those are just these lines that u make shorter or longer with the sliders.
