can it be done? has anyone out there managed to get groove templates into the 3000?

Bystructure Sat Mar 13, 2004 7:48 pm
i know what you're saying, the machine generates massive grooves using its swing functions but things still sound quantized to my ears. i believe the mpc 4000 (with all its shortcomings etc) has roger linn's groove templates frozen into software and i was wondering whether anyone has found a way of getting serious human feel grooves into the 3000.

swing or timing correct off.

sure, no quantize, no swing, and this is the way i've been writing drum parts for years because i love human feel. but it's time-consuming and really fussy work.

the other day i heard groove templates laid over fairly basic hip hop moves and this blew me away completely. if the mpc3000 can't do this then it has a serious flaw to my mind, and i've been using an mpc60 for many many years so i'm no novice.

i tried the 4000 for six months and took it back, hated the feel of that machine, no mpc magic to my mind. but it does have the roger linn groove templates, so maybe i made a mistake???

now i face the transition to a laptop/logic setup coz' the message i'm getting is that it's impossible to get these templates into the 3000. shame, coz apart from this it has everything.

the groove templates are the swing settings on, try 66% and hit your patterns.

It takes a bit to learn to work with it.

maybe you cannot programme drums, maybe your crap, maybe you have no patience.

i opt for the 3rd one. it takes time to make a machine work for you. the 4000 is a powerful drum machine sampler. the swing parameter is a very common one, used in almost any sequencer.

its the the mpcs rock solid hardware timing, along with its swing section (very common feature), pads, and your end user skills that add to this expressive human / groove feel.

MPC Magic = doesn't exist.

Damn, Roopesh is bringing it!

ok. never said i was the world's #1 drum programmer but i do consider myself patient, especially with roopesh and his personal remarks of staggering silliness.

the fact stares us in the face. it's impossible to emulate drummers like sly dunbar, elvin jones, bernard purdie on a sequencer. people've tried and come close but we all need to recognize the limits. now groove templates from dna and propellerheadz have swept the cosmos and left the dinosaurs behind.

far as i know the only hardware sequencer to incorporate some serious templates is the yammy qy700. what i'm saying here is: sad the mpc3000 didn't benefit from cutting-edge 'tings. no disrespect to those who kill with this machine.

peace-up

the 3000 is like 10 years old...

thats like saying, its a shame the 486 pcs didn't benefit from the pentium technology.

in life, technology moves on, not backwards.

the 3000 IS the groove template!!!!!

People convert MPC sequence timing to groove templates for other soulless machines like PCs.

respected dudes, i take what's been said here on board, offer thanx for viewz and newz. ("16D n E" mus be some Esoteric reference and little pull, but i can take a joke, my bruvs.)

mpc is a main lifeline to music. first the sixty, now the 3000. couldn't operate other ways. no pc in my lab.

nevva-da-less, loving the mpcs so bad i can still see i will be sourcing groove templates from somewhere in the future.

(anyone: check the 'drunken' template in the qy700. the boredom of loops destroyed in a microsecond, broken beats at yr service)

but i will never finish wid the linn mpcs. and in fact i may find a way of getting what i want from the heart of the big mother. currently my contact at akai support uk, cool brer called joe, is exchanging emails with japan to try and find the bottom line about importing gt midi files into the 3000. he feels it could happen. akai j are being incomprehensible. anything i get will be posted here for my bredrens.

I don't think that would be hard, just import the template midi file, then assign the sounds to the notes.

Not as slick as on the computer.

The other way is to make your beat in the MPC as close as you canand adjust in step edit to the feel you are after.

Any chance of hearing the Drunken template? midi file perhaps?

Bystructure Wed Mar 17, 2004 2:54 pm
among many other cool (and tweakable) templates in the qy 700 drunken is bad. if i could find a way of exporting it as a midi file sure i'd send it 2 u elmacaco.

best thing i can say, if i find some midi file gts out there and have any success i will fling them to you direckly.

Thanks Structure,

I may have to have a play with that 700 sometime.
