besides direct record, edit shift/swing from qlink, apply qlink realtime to entire pgm....

i think youre comparing the best to the worst. IMO the mpc 1000 with the JJ OS gives you the best workflow you could wish for on a MPC ( dunno about the 4000 tho but i heard its quite a learning curve). the only big drawback would be the pad issues or maybe the unbalanced 6 outs or the 16 bit sampler if you're really acting like you're a pro.
i messed around with mpc 500 at the store and even though i have been wishing for a battery operated mpc i think it kinda sucks especially for the price they are charging.
my advice would be to go for the mpc 1000 with the JJ OS.... even if your pads break it's still the best you could get for the money...especially second hand.

I went to buy a mpc 500 the other day and had a little go before purchasing and was not impressed.

The pads are not responsive enough you have to hit them pretty hard to get a sound compared to the other mpcs.

The only thing that put me off. everything else is cool on and its looks fresh but the pads are a big let down.

Pay the extra £100 and get a 1000.

How does pad sensitivity have anything to do with sound? This to me sounds like someone saying he would rather have a Sony laptop than a Macbook because 'dude I need to push those Macbook keys pretty hard to have text come out like it does on PCs when I type heaves of nonsense into messageboards'.

But, unlike on a computer keyboard, the pad sensitivity can be adjusted. There is little mention of this in your review (for lack of better word) of the MPC 500.

Heres my take... as far as 16 vs 24 bit sampling... um unless you have some fricking expensive assed dithering equipment, youll never get it mixed to 16 bit (Audio cd) without losing quality on your sound. So dont stress on that, you can still make a grammy winning recording with 16 bit if you learn your equipment.

I didnt like the way the 500's pads felt in the store... call me crazy. It felt like a cheap plastic pos. If I am on tour and have money to waste, ill get one.
The 1000 is the bomb becase A: jj and B : Internal hard drive with usb. for 60 bucks on ebay I got a 100 gig drive.. All my libraries, all my live drumming, EVERYTHING is sitting on that puppy ready to go. When you work on a song, after you purge samples, and save all to a new directory. This way, you load up a song and its sample like BYAAAAA, and you are off to the races.

I must admit, the pads on the 2500 feel a billion times better. But dont be a pussy, use what you got, people made millions off of much much much worse equipment than a 500 or 1000.

I say go for the 1000 because of the harddrive option and the screen. Playing with the two in the store without the JJ OS the 1000 wins in my opinion. I may be crazy but I played with the 2500 today and I swear the JJ OS for the 1k kicks its a**!? My two cents
