is this normal?

Hi all,

I have just got my first MPC, the 1000, and am having a few problems.I am not sure if these probs are normal or a weird bug.

My first one is that i am chucking samples across from my pc via usb, mainly kicks and snares and the mpc seems to be adding a click then a small amount of silence, before the front of the sample. My samples are chopped spot on the front of the samples in the pc and cannot see why the mpc is doing this.

Has this happened to anyone else? or may there be a prob with my mpc?

Sounds weird. Not normal.

Make sure you are saving the samples in standard WAV format, 16bits 44,1kHz. There are a number of variants that you might accidentally have saved the samples in.

You could also try a resample, transfer it over to the computer again and compare the waveforms to confirm there really is a click and a silence.

I see this with cool edit, don't know if you have another program. But it's caused by the program that saved the .WAV file: it's saving extra info as a header to the file. However, the MPC doesn't recognize that part of the .WAV format, so it plays the header as if it were data. If you Trim-mode the front of the the wav, you'll see the real sample starts at exactly 1024 samples in...1K of header.

In cool edit, you can re-save those files after turning off the "save extra info" box. Look for a similar feature if you're using another program.

thanks man, i'm using wavelab. i will see if i can find a setting to see if its doing this. i find that i had to move the start point to 2043. So i am not sure if this connects to the 1024/1k you mentioned.

did resaving in cool edit with this feature turned off solve the problem?

The MPC only reads 16bit 44.1 samples if it's anything else it adds that nasty click - before tranferring your samples make sure they are 16bit 44.1 cool?

yeah just checked,they are def 44.1 and 16 bit.

i've seen this only when i save samples in wavelab.

open and re-save in soundforge or cool edit pro.
should "cure" your samples.

dunno why technically (dc offset?) but it works.

I use cool edit and never had this problem! Never had to change any settings or anything. Exactly how it's cut in cool edit is exactly how it's cut on my 1000. No clicks or silences. I'm using CEP 2 that may be the reason.

Whoever said is was extra header info is right. The .wav spec allows you to put a couple of K of manufacturer-specific info at the front. Check your wavelab configuration and make sure you're saving them as raw wav's.

I looked at wavelab 4. Didn't try it all the way, but do a [File]-> Save As...

At the bottom you see "Attributes"...make sure that's set to "None", or try "Edit" attributes and see that it's clear, then set to "None".

In wavelab under option/preferences/file there was an option ticked to
"create optimized file headers".

With this switched off, problem was solved.

Lou1: If you create a sample from scratch, or convert say an MP3, it seems to have the extra info set to on by default. If you open, edit, & save a .wav, it keeps what the wav originally had..which was probably off (I have CEP2 & Audition also).

My samples seem to have a small click on them even if I sample directly into the MPC with a mixer routed turntable.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I do create my samples from scratch, besides a couple of drum kits, and convert from MP3 to wave and back and forth all over the place and have not noticed clicks, or any of that other junk. The only time I notice clicks is when I'm not looping shit correctly or haven't cut a chop right!

I'm curious, maybe I'll try to see if I can duplicate the problem and get silences and clicks in my shit too!

BTW I have never gotten anything to loop without clicks, or something retarded happening, with just the 1000. After the first week or two I gave up and now just stick to doing it on the PC. I don't have much patience for chopping on the MPC.
