is hip hop ever in 3/4 time sig?

6/8 is a very natural time signature, but since u r asking the question then it should be obvious that it isn't common. it's nice to experiment, but don't lose sight of the fact that rap music is popular music.

also 2 say that there is no rules to music is like saying there r no rules to life. music is based on mathematics just like everything in this world and math has laws. just by the virtue of calling a certain type of music hip hop means that it has to have a certain sound, which is a law.

but yeh, it is definitely possible...like the previous posts say..time signatures is just pure math.

I finally got around to jamming with my brother punk band. Everthing was fine, but then they wanted my MP to substitute what there "horrible" drum player was trying to do & it was in a crazy time sig. I think 3/4 or 3/5. Anyway, on the fly I couldn't get it to sound right. The room got kind of uncomfortable for a moment too. haha. I guess if you can rock it like that all the power to you.

nah worst comes to worst is 4.

one of the songs off gangstar's Daily Operation is in 3/4 but guru doesn't flow over it incredibly well. beat's cool thouh.

^You mean the slow one @ the end "Stay Tuned", that's a slow 4/4 loop, looped wierd and early. makes it seem like 2/5/4/3...

this is a good thread. i like to make beats in time signatures other than 4/4. check out prefuse 73, dabrye, or even aphex twin if you want to hear innovative beats with unusual signatures. 4/4, then 3/4, then chopped and repeated, stuttered and right back to the 4/4 when it is least expected. i like the fact that the head nod can be forgotten for a moment; when it comes back , it's even more interesting and catchy. err....maybe that was a bit of a generalization.... my songwriting professor said that songs are made up of repeated patterns/motifs..... its the combination of the unusual and predictable that gives artists their style. till next time..........

ok yeah i just paid attention to heaven. one of my favorite tracks, never noticed it was in 6/8 tho. so im gonna try and mess around with this 6/8 sample, because this sample im working with here seems to be better looped than chopped.

is a 3/4 Beat .. there are a lot of beats at 3/4 some of you guys just dont notice while listening to them LOL

I rapped over some 3/4 Beats myself ! and who ever says 3/4 is not a usual Hip Hop flow should gtfoh

if i do remember right there is some Company flow joint by El-p at 3/4 i will check...
