Using digital out and MPC as a slave?(external sync)

Hi all

I´m trying to use the digital output of the MPC to send audio to my soundcard, but I can´t do it if I don´t set the soundcard with internal sync source. (otherwise there's a click beating very loud)

I want to let the soundcard with the default internal sync, and just send digital audio to the computer

Is it possible? Thanks!!

First what kind of soundcard do you have? Second what is your setup from the MP to the Soundcard>the PC and software?

I'm running a Pentium 4 under Windows XP Pro. The problem is independent of the software that I use, the noise is a problem about the comunication between the soundcard, an M-Audio Firewire Audiophile and the MPC-1000. If I place the sync as 'external' (clock sync) it works... But I want to let the souncard as a master with internal sync, otherwise the souncard doesn't work if I don't turn the MPC on.

Is it possible?

...I didn't mention it, but the comunication is from the digital SPDIF out of the MPC1000 to the SPDIF in of the soundcard. Both units are also conected by MIDI in and MIDI out...

You have to set sync to external. That's how spdif works.

If you had the more professional AES/EBU you can sync everything from one clock source. The sync signal has its own wires and are routed separately.

With spdif, you have to take the sync from the audio source.

All right. My question is: Is possible to the the sync of the MPC as external, instead of doing this in the soundcard.?

In this forum I saw people using the SPDIF on the other way and they seemed to not having any problem...

Is everybody setting the soundcard as a sync 'slave'...?

Set it to external.

When you're not using the mpc, set it to internal.

I'm trying to do the same thing, except sync with my Yamaha 03D digital mixing board. I'm also using a M-Audio Firewire Audiophile.

If I have AES-EBU in on my mixer, can I connect SPDIF to that channel? or does it have to be spdif to spdif? Do I need special cables for spdif? or does RCA work just fine?

Can I daisy chain the Computer, Mixer and MPC all together? How does the sync work in that situation?

You can connect AES-EBU to spdif and it will work in most cases- -there are impedance differences and you will have to buy adapters.

yes, you can (and should!) daisy chain spdif, just like midi. Make sure you don't make a feedback loop tho.

You need special cables for spdif, but a good video cable has worked for me when nothing else was at hand (you know, the one with yellow plugs)

Digital audio has to be synched from the same chip. So wherever your digital audio starts from, synch to that. That means you put everything to external synch except where your signal starts.

If everything is AES you should be able to use BNC plugs (pro video) connectors routed separately, normally from a dedicated clocking device.

Hope that makes sense...

Here are an example of a cheap AES - spdif solution:


RME fireface 400, phono (RCA) to AES (XLR) converters. I'm sure you have something similar in the states.

edit: you can of course try to solder your own if you keep the length down; don't stretch it over 5m.
