whatupdoe

I know there's some experienced hedz on this forum. I'm a freshman to this mpc sh*t and I'm really lookin for u cats to educate me.

basically I'm finally bout to take the plunge into the mpc market. I know I got the records and the ideas, I jus need the right tool... so the million dollar question is, "which f***in mpc do I buy?"

I know thats a very general question, so let me be narrow it down. when u were startin out, what model(s) did u find it easiest to bang out beats on, or which model would you recommend to a novice?

I got to be honest, the 1000 is very tempting but I've got serious concerns about the pads. the 2000xl on the other hand has the whole romance factor, but I'm not sure how user friendly it is... I know this topic ain't exactly groundbreaking but I want to hear as many opinions as possible. GET UR VOTES IN!!! all advice is appreciated

peace

Hi, welcome to the mpc forums. I've bought the blue/red mpc 1000 a year ago and had to return it after 8 months because of the pads. I've bought the XL and I'd not go back just because of the feel and sympathy I feel towards it. If You get the effects board, the machines become very similiar in functionality.
I could bang out a beat on the first ńight with the XL, as I found it very similiar to the 1000. Nothing complicated, MPCs are generally very user friendly and I wouldn't worry about that. If You like the look and feel of the XL, get it. Btw the pads are great and really solid on the XL. On the other hand, my friend's the black version of the 1k and it seems better than the old version so if portability and functionality (again, they are very similiar, on 1k you have 3 pole filters, mono programs allowing you to stop the previous playing pad by hitting an anoter pad with sample assigned to, those are the main stregths of 1k) are your priorities, get the smaller one. I chose XL.

thnx man. its good to hear that u found the XL easy to use. that was a big concern of mine...

the pad issue with the 1000 is def swingin me towards gettin an XL. BUT is there anything else to be said for gettin a 1000? (1000 users get at me)

also, are there any significant differences within the XL range? e.g. 2000XL vs. 2000XL-MCD. I'm even considering stretching to a 2500 cash permitting

again your advice is much appreciated ppl

maybe u should check out the manuals for the mpc's?

i wouldn't buy the mpc 1k if i where u. there is a design flaw with their pads and they are bound to go bad sooner or later

damn it sounds like I should stay clear of the 1000! but if theres nothin to be said in its defence, there must at least be some drawbacks to the 2000xl?

I checked out the manuals. very helpful... thnx

Drawbacks of XL: size, no effects, few outputs and floppy disks as standard, no mono program (very useful thing on the 1k, but you can still get around that by mute groups on the XL), only a low pass filter and no usb. Btw, cutting the samples on the XL is a bit better, i like the waveform on it more, eventhough the display is smaller than 1k's.

1k is still a very good machine, If it is to be your only hardware, than it is a though choice. I combine my XL with Asr-10, which gives me the effects and filters of 1k (I don't have the effect board). If you aren't scared to open the 1k to repair the pads after sometime, then buy it. It was the only drawback fo me.

i don't feel like typing the same thing over and over again, but check out the jj os. the 1000 is the most powerful mpc right now outside of the 4000. the code gives the machine features that not even the 4000 has. functionality, it is not similar to the 2000xl because it can do far, far, far more.

if you're not picking up the 1k, used, you're spending more money than you need to for outdated/enormous machinery. unless you're solely looking for pads, in which case mpds are under 100 bones these days.

i think you should get the 1k, besides the pad issue i think its the best solution for you. ive had the 2kxl and now the 1k and i do miss the feel of the 2kxl and the pads of it, but the 1k beats it in all other ways more or less.
if the pads break you can buy new one from vstservice or fix them yourself or maby a handy friend, its not that hard.

the 2kxl is used to the fullest in a studio with the 8 optional outputs and a mixer/or soundcard, since you cant do any eq on the 2kxl you are very limited even at the creative process. but with the 1k you can sample some stuff of your records and set some highpass filter on it and leave space for your bass and voila, your mix will be more professional and its easy as hell.

and lets not talk about the processing speed of the 2kxl, its about 10 times slower than the 1k, which was cool 10 years ago when you had no choice but nowdays it feels like it has the same power as a calculator...
(althogh you can everything very fast with the 2kxl besides that, the placement of the buttons and wheel is genious)

either way you will be satisfied, both mpc's are dope....

right so the 1000 is soundin much more desirable now. (wf did akai have to use cheaper pad technology on it though?)

antonym thanx for your comments. I see u help out a lot of dumb motherf***ers like me on here. are u sayin that u hook up an mpd thru the 1k as an external MIDI device? that sounds kinda wack, but if it works...

I got to be honest, part of me can't let go of the idea of gettin a 2000xl. its jus got that classic look, but I guess I'm jus a sentimental motherf***er... if any 2000xl users got anything more to say in its defence pls let me know before I go n spend my hard earnt cheddar on a 1k

thnx

the 2000 was completely at the head of the circus in its day.

as for the mpc1000 pads, you can actually use that as a way of getting it cheaper. find some dumbass who is passing it off cuz of "broken pads" and then either buy new pads from vst or hold off til i start shipping out sensors.

there's a chance that jj might consider implementing a way of allowing mode functions to be triggered by mode + midi note instead of just mode + pad. that way you could access mode functions from the mpd.

who knows?

ive always wanted to get the 2kxl for all the reasons Detta pointed out, but after reading alot on here and what not, im def leaning more towards the 1k when i get my dough!
