Mixer

So I'm looking to buy a mixer to take full advantages of my 8 outs.
But I'm a bit confused as I don't know much about mixers.
I'm mainly looking at the mackies, but I don't know why I should buy the Onyx over the regular 1604VLZ pro for example.
I have a M-audio firewire 1814 to go with it...
What would the onyx offer me that my 1814 with the vlz can't?

been doin some research myself but havn't been enlightened enough to have actual knowledge. hopefully some experienced heads can...

onyx has better preamps and way better eq...

onyx has firewire audio interface option...

vlz is a good mixer also... depends on your budget really...

i wouldnt get anything less than a 1604vlz though... 4 buses really come in handy... 8 buses is what i eventually want to get...

So is the mackie onyx mixer a valid protools audio interface?

NO...

Protools is ONLY compatible with DIGIDESIGN hardware, with the exception of Protools M-Powered, which is compatible with certain M-Audio interfaces....

you could use it as just a mixer before entering the computer via a DIGIDESIGN or M-Audio interface/soundcard though...

if your going protools you NEED DIGIDESIGN hardware, unless of course your going to use PT M-Powered with M-Audio hardware...

if your set on PT, look into those interfaces mentioned...

if your set on one of those mixers mentioned, look into some other software besides Protools... try Cubase OR SOME OTHER PROGRAM WITH THOSE>>>

im not a protolls ( misspelling but i think it fits them so ill leave it ) expert but wouldnt you still need an audio interface that would receive those digital outputs from the mixer into your computer? and if you were to be using PT software, you would most likely NEED digidesign hardware as your interface right?!?!

If I have a VLZ what piece of equipment allows me to record different information on different tracks in protools. I want the VLZ to work like the digi 002 but with many more channels how is that done?

more than an 002? hmmm...

look into adat optical, 8 channels over 1 digital cable....

im not sure what digidesign hardware has adat optical I/O, but you would definitely need a mixer with digital adat optical outputs... not sure if the onyx has the needed i/o but the VLZ sure doesnt as it is an analog mixer...

I thought the LE versions of PT were at least compatible with the M-AUDIO stuff. Maybe, maybe not. However, I use a behringer MX8000 coupled w/ 2 echo layla 24/96 cards and Nuendo 2. That's my alternative to a PT TDM system until I can afford one.

nope, m powered works with m audio hardware and le works with digi hardware and nothing else like fobe stated...

Cooocooo I appreciate you correcting me. I knew one of those versions were compatible with the M-Audio interfaces. But I know both the m-powered & le versions are scaled down or limited versions of the TDM software (minus the hardware).

If you try and use any other hardware other than Digidesign hardware for Pro Tools LE, I mean any[b] hardware (Yamaha, Korg, Echo, anything) you will be pissed because it will not work. And M-Powered Pro Tools only works with select M-Audio hardware, no exceptions. I know from personal experience!
