The Tr-808 and 909 were never pennies on the dollar...not even today (unless you found a broken one that doesn't work). Some of the so-called real musicians were scared of drum machines and samplers period when they first surfaced. The TR808/909 sound was all over records in the 80s and sampled TR808/909 sounds are still being heard today.
They were too pennies on the dollar. I bought an 808 for $50 in '83.
The 808, 909, TB303, 606 were all considered toys and all ended up getting blown out by dealers. The 808 and TB303 were failures at the time. The 909 was a total disaster when it was released. These were the biggest money losing products for Roland at the time.
It was because they were so cheap, that people in lower income areas bought them and then made them legit and famous. The prices went up after the units were no longer in production and after dealers had blown the things out or sold them at a big loss.
as for Boom chick.....yawn.
Jomox, machine drum and too many MPC compatible sample libraries to mention have analog drum sounds that are fine.
