That is, for eact step in song mode, it would be nice to be able to enter what sequence, number of repeats, and which tracks should be muted. This would make it much simlpler to make variations, breaks e t c without having to copy every sequence like a myriad of times and make small adjustments. Tha Machinedrum has this feature (and you can also, for each step, say what beat (of teh sequence, or pattern in MD language) to start on, and what beat to end on, so you can play just a part of a sequence.

If it's not available, that would be a great feature for the next OS (either Akai or JJ...)

I miss this badly. I don't find it that easy to do songs the MD but I love the whole sequencer anyway. Yo if you wanna catch some of the sutff I have been doing with my MD + MnM combo, have a look at myspace.com/stefski. It's just unmixed and well who cares. There are MD mutes in there.

Hmmm...If I understand you correctly there should be a simple answer to this. How about you format your track in song mode, convert it to its own seq and record the track mute with that seq? Am I way of here?

The 500 doesn't have recordable track mutes.
