yeah, i already have the top software DAWs and countless plug-ins on my laptop with a controller with pads (although obviously not like MPC pads), but that's the reason i want an MPC, i don't like using software all the time, especially in a live situation. I do want to use a combination of the two though....i just don't really like completely software based creation or performance.
anyway, yeah im gunna get the 1k.
cheers pee pees

the pads on ALL models of MPCs break eventually. the buttons will too (although this is usually fixable.) the same goes for any electronic gear with mechanical parts. yeah the pads on the mpc 1000 are less durable than the other models but a) they should still last quite a while unless you bang on them like crazy (hint: try the full velocity button) and b) you can buy replacements/fix them.
there are a lot of people stirring crap on this forum about the 1000, but when it comes down to it it's an awesome machine. lesser pads or not AKAI build quality is much better than the other players in the industry (roland, yamaha, korg). but the way people are complaining here you'd never guess.

raise your hand/say aye if you've ever seen the inside of an mpc1000 pad...now raise your hand if you've posted in this thread...
for early model 1000s, this is simply not true. it is not force of use, it is just plain use. 4 dots of silicon glue is not enough to hold a moving part used in a finger drum pad. yes it is an awesome machine, but it's an awesome machine with a really bitchy achilles heel.

well antonym i guess it's simply not true because you say so. i must have a "magic" mpc.
i bought my blue & red mpc a few months after the mpc1000 became generally available. i've used it heavily since then. most of the time i have full level turned on. that's that.

you'll find that there are users who have the same story as you. you'll also see that there are dosens of users who have quite a different story. this difference is not dependent on use (or rather, misuse). it's simply flawed, faulty engineering.

i'm quite aware of the problem.
it's crazy to say that the problem isn't dependent on use however. of course whacking the pads harder will destroy them faster. not that you shouldn't be able to whack on 'em.
point is though i'm very happy with my mpc1000 and if i have to spend a hundred bucks somewhere down the line to replace the pads, it's not the end of the world. i'd have to do the same thing (granted, it'd take a bit longer) with any other MPC.
all the doom & gloom and negative talk is making it seem like AKAI are junk merchants, and that's not right, because if you compare their hardware to any other modern manufacturer they're at the top. yeah the mpc1000s pads will not last ten years but it's still an awesome machine for the $$$. especially if one uses it as opposed to spending every hour of the day griping on forums.

is this the same for the new black mpcs?
do the pads have the same dilemmas?
do we have any testimonials on here?

dude are you working for akai or something?? The pads are fuked. I've had mine about 2 years, i use it daily. I dont bang the hell out of my pads, but they are still going.. The 1st pad hardly responds even on full levels.
The pads are the main part of the machine and are used for practically every function. Losing sensitivity is bad, but losing the functions of the pads is really unacceptable.
Dont ride Antonym, he is trying to solve this problem.

when i press my pads at the corners and hold down it will play the drum over and over again like note repeat is on, it only seems to work right if i hit dead center on the pad - and even then sometimes it will play the sample double.
is this a sign of failing pads?

shit, and i JUST got the thing off ebay - no wonder the dude was selling it. it's not terrible or anything but yeah it seemed a bit odd that it would be doing that. what would you guys recommend? sell it? keep it?

it's ok. keep it. there are simple ways of repairing it to make it last, and if you got it on ebay you probably got a good price for it. you'll still come out on top.
you may be new here so you wouldn't know but i'm creating a pad replacement kit using 3rd party sensors and home-cured, thicker rubber pads. keep your eye out.

am new here, but i have read through all those posts about your pads, seems like you're really onto something so keep up at that.
and as far as good price --- maybe. is 700 for a blue/red version a good price? you can be honest, i won't be too mad if i got ripped off
