What does multi-sample or the action of multi-sampling mean?

What's Up My Fellow MPC users:

I hear the term "multisample" used quite frequently. What does it mean when someone says "You can multi-sample".. Or what does it mean when someone refers to "multi-sampling instruments"? Can anyone break it down for me?
