MPC 2000xl Os Update

A friend of mine has a 2000xl ( not the Mcd Blue one) , im trying to get an Os update for him , is it safe to use the one on akaipro.com or is there one someone could link me to . thanks !

If he doesn't have a cardreader, use os 1.14 from the akaipro site.
Not sure what you mean by SAFE but, there is no problem with it.

i got my 2000xl with a 250zip in it.

my OS is 1.14

i already ordered my MCD reader and should be coming in the mail tomorrow.

my question is...WHEN exactly do i upgrade to OS 1.20?

do i upgrade AFTER i install the MCD or BEFORE?

also...what kinda card is the best to use?
i was gonna use SD cards since i got a couple of them...but i've been noticing that a lot of people use CF cards.
any reason?

do they just work better?

A lot of people have written that SD cards don't work that well but I have no problems with either:

1GB CF card from ATP
1GB SD card from PQI

I'm running os 1.20 on an old gray 2000xl

Just don't copy files onto the cards with OSX or you won't be able to navigate folders on the MPC properly.

the whole OSX thing...does that apply to every type of media?
like...does akai expect you to be transferring stuff into the card(s) from a pc and not a mac?

I upgraded to 1.20 after installing the card reader (from 1.14) but I'm not sure how much it matters.

From my experience, you can safely copy files to and from a MPC2500 CF card on OSX but things get weird when you use MPC2000XL formatted cards. I'll see if I can come up with a workaround because it really is a pain in the arse.

Basically is works like this:
When you copy a file from OSX to a FAT16 disk (the format that MPCs use) it actually copies over invisible files that break the directory structure of the card when it is read by the 2000xl. For example, when you copy over a folder called KICKS with a file in it called KIK1.wav you end up with a folder on the MPC card called KICKS with 3-4 files in it called KIK1.wav, .DS_Store, .Trashes, and ._KIK1.wav. The .Trashes folder will only appear if you've deleted some files from that particular folder on your computer. As far as I can tell, the invisible "." files prevent the MPC from properly navigating through the directories so you end up unable to move back out of folders once you have gone into them.

It's possible that you can use the Terminal and use the "cp" command to copy files onto the card without Finder garbage but I haven't tested that out yet. Let me see what I can come up with and I'll get back to you about it.

I'm fortunate enough to have an Intel Mac so I can just boot into XP when I need to transfer files back and forth, but it really isn't convenient.

hey....i had another question....

when u start using a brand new fresh zip disk...what's the first thing u have to do?
put it in the mpc and format it?
does this apply to cards that i will soon be using (like an SD card)?

cuz usually if i buy a zip disk or something...i just put it in my pc, put files on it, and transfer them onto my mpc and everything works fine.

is that bad or is that ok?

Dunno about ZIPs, but I always format my card on the MPC first and then transfer stuff to and from my computer.

Just an update on my previous post:
Even after stripping the WAV files, removing all OSX specific files, creating directories on the MPC first, etc., I still can't get cards to work properly between the MPC and OSX. The only real solution that I could find so you don't have to reboot every time you want to move samples (with an Intel mac) is to run XP through a program called Parallels. You can set Parallels to automatically see the card once you connect it to your computer and then you can just transfer files from OSX to your Parallels XP environment and then to the flash/SD card. Hope this helps someone.

Also, if anyone can figure out a way to solve the directory problem with OSX and MPC cards, please let us know Here is the test:

1. Format the SD/CF card on the MPC.
2. Connect the card to your Mac.
3. Copy over some files and folders (at least 2 levels deep).
4. Load the card into your MPC.
5. Go into the deepest folder you made.
6. Try to use the cursor to get back to the ROOT directory without ejecting or reloading the card (i.e. just using the left cursor button).

It doesn't matter which one you use I use OS 1.14 and I have a MCD and have had no problems.

Does anyone have same kind of problem?
I just got new CF card 512mb and it works fine on my mpc (I can save samples, format etc.) but when I put it in my Pc card reader, the pc won-t detect the card. It detects all other cards, but not this.

someone else got the same problem?? did I went wrong when i formated it in MPC?

Yeah you need to format it in the PC with Fat or Fat32

Any tricks how to do it?..cuz my pc won´t detect it anymore

I don't know. My boy did the same thing so we took it back and said tht it wouldn't work and got a new one.
