MPC1000 CF CARDS/Data storage headaches

I've been using the MPC1000 system now for about 3 months.

I'm running into read/write problems with my CF's. I currently store 12 programs (each with independent sounds) saved on a 128MB CF. Occasionally when i get to loading the last program in the group ( i have to have them all in RAM when i'm using my MPC) i get File read errors or "freezes" on individual samples. I have to kick the card out, delete whatever i have in RAM, and then try to reload the program. Occasionally this doesn't even work and I'm screwed! (can't get the sound back from the CF)

Of course now i'm hyper-paranoid, i bought a CF reader for my laptop and i backup the CF all the time. But what good is a backup if the file is there, it looks good, but it can't be loaded?

Does anyone know of limitations on the number of files (sounds or programs) that can be stored on a given CF? I know Akai boasts a 2GB capacity on CF's that the device can read, but what good is it if you get errors?

I also have a 256MB CF that i use as well, same problems surround it.

Rebooting helps, but if you're in a situation where you can't write to the CF, rebooting means chucking your work.

I'm using SANDISK Compact Flash. Maybe they have sucky chips inside? Anyone else have this problem?

I just got a Magistor Type II 2 gig card and the MPC won't format it or read it. I'm assed out $160. WTF is up with Akai?

did you guys check the akai website for the list of compact flash cards that have been tested and approved to work with the 1k? i saw something about this there.

Yeah, saw that but figured that were the only ones they tested. I mean, why would it be so finicky? They should post a list of cards that don't work too.

Headsnack: Did you format on Windows/Mac? or on the MPC? If you have a CF reader, try to find out what format it is (FAT16 orFAT32)...if it's FAT32, reformat to 16.

Tried formatting at both 16 & 32, full format & quick format on Windows. Also tried numerous times on the mpc. When i format with windows the card does get formatted and allows me to store wav.'s but then mpc can't open 'em.

I've had exactly the same problem, twice - but curiously it's been a (different) crash cymbal that has done it both times. I just USB'd up and then deleted the sample and replaced it with a different one... worked ok. I think the problem is with the samples rather than with the card

the mpc seems finnicky with sample names...they must be a certain length, otherwise the name gets truncated and only the first sample gets loaded...for example: if i want to load a series of samples called "big fat electronic drums 001, big fat electronic drums 002, big fat electronic drums 003...etc."(stupid name but you get the point)...the name will get shortened to "big fat electr" and only the first sample will get loaded as the mpc will 'see' the other samples as having the same (truncated) name.

also...not all .wav files (i.e. 'recycled' wavs) are read; they need to be resaved in another program...and finally: the .wav suffix needs to be there, otherwise they won't be seen...

MPC doesn't read .wav's saved out of Pro-Tools - any suggestion as a work around?

Yes, I got the same problem with Protools. What I did to work around it was to sample whatever I wanted Digitally via S/PDIF, instead of bouncing what I wanted. I know is not the Ideal answer for the problem, but you get the same sound quality in the sample since is a digital transfer (010101) .

Now, talking about the CF's . I think its really stupid that AKAI its making their Customers go through a Lottery process everytime we buy a CF Card. They should make sure that every freaking card made worked with the MPC or at least have a descent list of cards that work or not work.

I ordered an IBM 340mb Microdrive, and I'm scared that the freaking thing will not work and that's about $50, right there. Last week I was about to buy the Magicsore 2.2gb card that didn't work for Headsnack, Now that's a $170 loss, that its almost a crime. AKAI should really take this Flash Card thing seriously, and start testing every brand imaginable. This is like saying Ok, buy this Protools system for $1000, but when you buy the plugins ($350- $950) some will work and some not, How nice right?

These are just my thoughts, to some they may sound be a little extremist but that's just the way I think. Chao!

I am also having troubles with the SanDisk 512. The wierd thing is that it seemed to work fine at first, but the longer I have it, the more "freezing" problems pop up. Seems to work fine in my card reader, and disk doctor doesn't find any problems.

What is the difference between Type I and Type II cards? Where is it listed what type of card I have?
