why jj os?

i know everyone love the jjos but what is it that makes it so much better?
i'm not talking sh!t, i really want to know. specifically.

its a handful of things. for me its been $30 for the addition of a step sequencer since day one. everything else is pretty much a bonus..

Just got it a couple days ago. Had the same question. 4 key features for me now that make it a no-brainer:

1-Chopping a sample is much easier.

Akai v2- you have to submit a number then wait for machine to process. No auto slice. Cumbersome process.

JJ os- it draws lines over wav so you can see and audition slices, allows you to go into decimals (for example-19.4) slices rather than just integers, auto slices to transients rather than just equal parts (I use this all the time) with ability to combine sections, able to move start and end points and audition sounds much easier.

2-Grid mode for drum pattern edits. JJ has it. Akai (for 1000) doesn't. Much easier to program, analyze, and edit complex drum patterns with it.

3-Consolidated Program List. Rather than having to go to various pages to edit things like OneShot, Poly, Levels, etc., a comprehensive grid contains editable fields to make it extremely quick to tweak settings. Also, includes ability to change all pads settings at once rather than one-by-one.

4-Direct Recording. JJ has it. Akai (for 1000) doesn't. Allows you to perform an entire hook (or even song) into ram sample memory. Great for sketchpad vocals, quick portable recording sessions, or sampling yourself when triggering another instrument.


Would also recommend searching for the PDF instruction manual that Steve (sp.?) posted. Excellent primer.

in addition to the list above, here's a few other points that I think make JJ's os the the brown goo...

- Recordable track mutes
- qLink sample start time
- qLink Swing and note shift
- change click settings without stopping (it's the little things
- Input pitch shift (can't play sequencer while doing this though)
- 300,000 notes for sequencer (just added, I haven't tested yet)
- the directory navigation is better
- midi sync with MMT
- Simult sequence (play 2 sequences at once)
- And of course PONG!

it really is a no brainer.
