Using the MPC 4000 with a PC

what are the advantages/disadvantages of using a MPC 4000 with your PC?

I have heard about this .sys thing but Its hard to understand even when reading the manuels. Im trying to decide between the 2500 and the 4000 and im a PC user so I would be doing a lot of transfers between the machine and my PC.... Some advice?

If you can't understand what Ak.Sys is all about even when reading its extremely clear and straightforward User Guide (which was written by Steve Howell of http://www.hollowsun.com ) then the MPC4000 is just gonna be too advanced and complex for you - don't waste your money, buy something cheaper and simpler instead.

well, basically, AK.sys allows you to transfer files (audio files, program files,...) from a PC to the MPC and allows you to save sequences, wave files and programs from the MPC to the PC.
All that through USB.

Thank you - you just sold me on the 4000. Can you not do this with the 2500 USB feature?

well, I only have a 4000.

I don't really know about the 2500, but I guess it can do the same things with USB.

aksys is great for handling program and multi parameters. you cant edit samples or sequences with it. it is moslty used for tra,sferring samples tp your computer. it doesnt run so well with windows xp though.. it crashes a lot. but it works very well in mac osx. it gives you a nice blue mixer too!

if it is just used to transfer files... doesent the 2500 or 1000 do the same thing?

first of all how is my reading comrehension lacking? what in this thread should I have been able to read and understand that I havent? Nobody has explained the difference between the 2500 USB and the ak.sys

I see those pictures make it a little clearer it looks like you can control your MPC with the computer in a way - is that how it works?

the problem is that u havent even tried to RTFM man,
if you did and didnt catched it maybe this machine isnt the tool for you, given that the aksys functionalities are pretty ssimple compared to all the beast's power and all the OTHER pages of the manual u'll have to read to dig it.

I did read some of the manual those things only tell you so much, especially when you dont have the machine in front of you. Im asking for a simple basic summary of what this shit does....... does this insult you guys are something? I mean whats the big deal.. u want me to read the whole manual and study that shit when yall have actually USED the thing and can give me a good general idea in a few sentences... christ

Anyways - after reading thru that big ass shit again It looks to me like the main diff is that you can edit program params and shit from your PC.. which is pretty cool. I had trouble finding info on editing sequences however - Like can you edit the velocity of a recorded pad hit like you could in Reason?

you can't edit sequences through ak.sys, only program parameters

sequences can be easily edited (with a grid mode like a DAW) on the MPC's screen. I'd say it's the main advantage of the MPC 4000 against the other MPCs. I mean, the screen is bright white and black, making it easy to read even for someone used to working on DAWs. Not like the displays of all the other MPCs that look like Texas Instrument oldschool calculators'.

I`m a little late to this post however feline may be right if the details we all read isn`t clear enough the 2500 may be your best bet. Remember you get out from it what you put in.

2500 is much simpler as it is a drum sampler with drum programs like the 2xl and other mpcs.

Plus you got the 4k newbie bible so have at it.

Haze - I'm not looking for simplicity honestly - I'm looking for what would work best with my Computer. I am used to making beats with Acid and Reason, thats how I work. I used to have a mpc 2000 but i rarely used it cuz i just hated transfering between the zips and the PC.

So i like that it has a ton of options and that it works well with the PC.. jus looking for some friendly descriptions and explinations thats all
