How do you start when making beats?

i always start by loading a random kit, sample hella records leave em on there and play around, then start chopping the samples. i might do ten sequences before i find one i like. then when i find one loop, i add some bars and some changes.

i do the same thing too. sometimes it clicks. sometimes you really gotta just experiment.

yeah, i mean sometimes i end up with 15 seqs and if i really, really dont like anything, ill switch her off or just record the alright ones to the comp as a stereo file (no future editing) and try again later.

I pretty much do what doveski does. I listen to some records, if something catches my ear I dump it on the MPC. Eventually I end up with a sh*tload of samples. then I just mess around, usually for a couple of days, until i get a sequence i like and go from there. I usually end up with a bunch of sounds and samples i never use.

I take time to make a nice drumset late at night.The next day i take the first record i get in my hands and make a beat out of it.I don't have many records, but i only buy shit i like(and sometimes shit i don't know nothing about-but only when the records are cheap).So when i grab a record i know i can work it the way i want.
Basicly with the melody, i'll take stuff that sticks out, like some instruments, make someting out of that and the listen to the rest of the record to find something extra.When i don't find anything to dd on, i'll just keep the beat simple.

if i got a sample i might chop it or loop it and just have a melody playing before i add the drums, then i add hi hats, snare and kicks. when i first got my mpc too though i aint no jack ish on how to lay some drums but practice makes perfect.
