Best budget EQ and/or Filter and/or Compressor

I need a recommendation for either
a.) A simple 8 or 11 band EQ, preferably table-top but rack-mount ok as long as it will be aight just sitting somewhere
Around $150-$200
b.) The same thing only maybe parametric (just learning what this means, sorry if I sound newb) and with filters sophisticated enough to really f*ck with the sound
I don't know, around $300?
c.) The same thing only with decent Compressor/Limiter

Basically I switched to hardware and I have no idea how to replace the EQ'ing, Compression, and Filters that I was used to in Soundforge + plugins. So I need to add all three to my setup in the most cost efficient manner possible without copping something I'll have to replace in 6 months when I reallize it's dogsh*t. And if I can have all 3 in 1 box then even better cuz my "studio" is my bedroom.

Well, for compressor look at the FMR Really Nice Compressor. It's $200 and superior to products costing lots more. Can't beat it. I'm not really sure if there is an equally cheap, high quality eq.

Be wary of all that electricity, it keeps you from falling asleep, im currently looking for a new place to live so i can seperate my gear and my sleeping accomodations.

as far as a filter, have you looked into the Electrix Filter Factory? I had one for a bit and its pretty good, your MPC has pretty good filters to, and what about your Korg, you can use the Microkorg as a filter box also.

As far as I knew my MPC only has that one Resonant Filter and I don't even get exactly what it does although I use it all the time. Is it just a low-pass?

Good point about the micro, I just have to read the manual again and figure out how to use it's filters on a sound from an outside source.
Even then the Korg only has like 3-band EQ I think.

If I just get the effects unit thing for the MPC how is the EQ? Can I trim sounds to specific frequencies? Like if I have a sub cand I low pas it below 200hz and then high pass the kick above 200hz so they both sit in the mix with no muddiness? That's all I need is like a simple 11 band EQ.

You dont need compression yet, all the shit your sampling is already compressed. Thats the most overused played term amongst rookie producers. The only time your really gonna need a compressor is on the final mix, or if your doing vocals, get a plug in or something like the FMR.

For sampling drums you could get a cheap noise gate instead of a compressor.

As far as filtering, if you got a 2KXL, you got alot of filtering options, like if you go to sounds, and the filter section, highlight a selection, say resonance and press open window, you will get even MORE options on the filtering. Resonance is a low pass filter. Freq is high pass.

I personally think the filters on the 2K sound like trash but thats just my opinion. 1.

I'll try that when I get home, I didn't think I had all those filtering options without the effects upgrade on the 2k.
And I will try not worrying about compression for now, I thought I used to hear the difference when I would use soundforge+waves, I would eq each sound individually, compress a little, then eq again, then I would compose the track, then I would eq the finished track, compress and eq again! But maybe it was in my imagination, I didn't have the greatest monitors anyway.

You wan't a REAL filter (MPC filters cannot be swept)

Get a SHERMAN FILTERBANK or take a look at a MOOGFOGER even the AKAI MFC 42 is really nice!

As for EQ I still think the best and most cost effective results are done in Software...

But a good COMPRESSOR - LIMITER - GATE will do wonders for your Drums... Depends what kind of music you are doing, but I would say some subtle compression on every track will gel your overall mix and make it hit harder. Remove annoying transient peaks on your drums or precussion and SQUASH the dynamics just enough to make room for other instruments...

However, I feel this is best done within' your multi-tracker... Have you considered buying a DIGITAL desk with a builtin' recorder such as HDD or CDRW most of these offer built in EFX for every track and are a good alternative to PC MULTI-TRACKING at around the same price... Check out AKAI, YAMMAHA, BERINGER, FORSTEX and all the rest!!

I was looking at this Korg Digital Hard Disc Recorder or something, the blue one that Doom is holdin on the back cover of the Madvillain single... But I didn't know if you could master individual samples and tracks or just the completed track.

Of Course....

You would cop an 8 outs board for you MPC and assign each sample to a different out and record each out into a different channel on your recorder. Then you could apply different efx, dynamics, eq to each channel individually.

How well does a Korg D1200 MK2 stack up against those? I kind of already started stacking my chips for that piece as soon as I saw it, but sometimes I'm the same with gear as I am with girls you know? The ones that look good might be trouble

You would wanna go into a store and check one out in person, and make sure you can run a Compressor & a Gate on seperate channels as thats what you originally wanted isn't it???? Speak to a Tech guy down there and ask plenty of Qs? Don't put up with someone who doesn't know his stuff... piss off and go to another store if he cannot give you the answers your after.... Or at the very least get them to demonstrate recording to a channel and applying EQ, Compression, Gating and Reverb...
