MPC1000 RAM and CF card Recommendations

ok, so I bought some memory off ebay (samsung cl2) for $27 shipped.... waited patiently for it to arrive, got it just as I was leaving for work, and waiting all day to go home and install the memory in my mpc. I get home, open her up, and install the memory.... at 74%, I get a memory error. I get pissed. I take the ram out, and look for anything obvious, and install it again... and the right clip on the mpc snaps in half..... great.

Ffffukkk, guys, I have run into yet another freaking MPC problem.
The MPC1000 FAQ does not have enough info, AKAI's manual leaves things out, and the search function on this board is probably the least useful thing I have ever used.

There is 5.6 mb of WAV free memory space available when I boot up my MPC. Basically, if I try to load up more than three samples, I run out of memory and need to turn my system on and off to start with another 5.6 mb which quickly runs out again. I had thought that if I purchase a 20gb hard drive, that I will have 20gb to work with while the MPC is on. Someone make this clear for me - The only way to make that WAV free space to go up would be to get that 128mb expansion, right? So 128mb is the maximum possible space for the "WAV FREE" memory?

When i got my MPC out of the box, there was 5.6 mb of "WAV free" space available. I thought that purchasing a hard drive would give me tons of space to open wavs on my MPC, so I purchased a hard drive and a CF card, unaware that I would need a mounting kit for the hard drive. Then I ordered a mounting kit, waited a week for it to arrive, installed that. And now I realize that the HD serves exactly the same purpose as a memory card. WHat a pain in the arse. Now I have overspent a lot of money, and still need to drop more on RAM as well as JJ OS. I wish all of the information I needed was in one place rather than all over the place. It keeps me and many others guessing. To be honest, it's more annoying than I can handle.

yes you need the 128MB ram upgrade to increase you're 'WAV free' space. as you've discovered, the hard drive is for permanent storage, when you turn the machine off.

money saving tip: don't buy the EXM128 from akai, go back to the first page of this thread and read through penfold's post, it shows you how to save a few bucks buy buying a 256MB stick of notebook RAM.

Hey, a good recommendation is to try newegg.com. They are a well-known computer hardware retail company, that gets you prices fairly cheap.

ok so check it out, the HD stores all ur sounds and samples on it
and the ram card is used for loading ur samples and sounds to ur mpc when you use them correct , so you need both HD and expantion card

Penfold, you are the man - lol - This post had me laughin . . . as I read your post about the 256MB card, i said to myself, "what, 256, i thought it was 128MB" . .and you went and reemphasized the 256MB - this was great because I went ahead and purchased the memory expansion, but the no frills (mine had a lbel that said Kingston - but also has a Compaq sticker on it! so you take your pics as to what the brand is!)

Now you really wanna get mad at something? How can I tell what type of OS I'm using?LOL - I keep hearing about these upgrades available out there for the OS, as high as 3.5 . . . I hear that the OS upgrades can give the 1000 some of te same capabilities as the 2500 . . .help a bro out if you can with any knowledge you may have about this . . .

I found out i'm using 2.7 operating system. Does anyone have any advice on hard drive installations? If you can give a specific hard drive model number or narrow it down to what "kind", that would be great. And is it just like installing a hard drive in a laptop or desktop computer?

Also, just a tidbit - i bought my MPC1000 used and it was working great . . still is, I waited about 5 months to get the extra RAM . . when i went to insert my RAM, I found out the latches that hold the RAM in place were broken!! The person who sold it to me must of carelessly ripped the memory out and jerked me in the process. I panicked at first, cuz the piece is glued to the motherboard and would be a major task to replace it . . taping the memory in wouldn't work cuz the tape wouldn't stick to the mother board surface . . so after some brainstorming with a friend, we took a packaging peanut, wrapped it in electrical black tape and "wedged" that sucker in place . . so far so good!! Worked like a charm! The RAM upgrade was absolutely necessary to get full utilizement of the MPC . . . if anyone has ran into the same problem, hopefully this story will help prevent them from freaking out like I did when I first noticed the latches were broken!

Just got my Toshiba 256 CL3 sodimm memory for $25 shipped. Is that a good price?

my 256mb Toshiba CL3 memory came in... I will post the results tonight...

well, it's a day later, but finally got the Toshiba 256mb CL3 SODIMM memory installed very quickly.

fired it up and the MPC reported 128mb. SUWEEET!!!

I wish I can bang out beats tonight, but I am gonna have to watch American Idol with the wife... so I may not be able to test out the sampler.

I am still waiting for my 2gb CF to get here... I have 2 on their way...

once I get them, I will be installing JJOS 3.06 just to get the saving to the HD issue resolved...

question: why, if you've got a hard drive, have you got cf cards on their way? installing an hd in mine meant that i don't use the cf card anymore, i just back up to pc.

I got the CF because they were cheap, and I will be collaborating with a friend who does not internet access, but has a PC.

so I will be sending CF cards back and forth in the mail...
