sample file formats

I apologize if this is remedial. I'm new to the forum.

A friend gave me a cd with a ton of samples. I put them on my computer and then onto a zip disk. (I'm going to get the card reader soon.) Unfortunately, my 2kxl won't recognize a lot of the file formats. Others will load, but when they play, it's like they are stuck on "note off" ... except that they will repeat themselves infinitely at the end of the sample. I don't really care that much b/c I am more into sampling all my own sounds.

However, can anyone suggest cheap audio recording/ editing software that I can use in the future that will avoid these issues. (I know that they need to be 16 bit 44.1 ..etx.) Also ... (sorry this is a long post) I am considering getting a boss sp 404 to sample with ( b/c of it's portability). Does anyone know, can I just dump samples from it to my pc, and then load them into my 2kxl without altering them? Any help would be very appreciated.

I got a 2KXL. When I sample I sample with the mpc because my soundcard is utter crap. I save that onto a floppy disk formatted with the mpc as a .WAV file. I can copy that file to my pc and do some preprocessing on it. When I'm done with things like eq'ing and some reverb and/or compression, I save the file on my pc as .WAV and transfer it back to the floppy. Never had trouble reading that file back in my mpc.

Is the zip disk you're using formatted by the mpc? As what format are you saving your files onto the zip disk?

I probably need to double check to make sure that I am saving them as .wav's. However, I also run into this problem: after i save programs on my zip disk, my computer won't recognize the zip disk any longer.

make sure you format in FAT16, so your mpc and pc can read it. learnt it the hard way

So, I went to reformat a zip disk in FAT 16, and it's not an option. The only options are FAT and FAT 32. Is there a solution to this?

Okay, so I switched to FAT and it seems to be working. My next issue: where in the MPC menus to I go to locate / change the sample's file format. Thanks for all your help. This forum has saved me so much headache.

you should just read the manual. THAT'LL save you a headache posting and waiting for answers
