hello all

i'm looking at buying an MPC3000 from the UK. i live in australia where power supply is 240V, 50Hz.

does the mpc3000 have a universal power supply that works everywhere around the world? if not, what do i need to do to use a UK MPC3000 in australia? i dont want to use a step down transformer if i can help it (big and clumbsy for gigging).

i don't think there's a universal power supply? it would be great for sure..

Getting an MPC3000 out of the UK for use within Australia is a sensible option due to our mains power supply similarities.

Provided that the MPC3000 you intend purchasing is designated for connection to our mains supply. ( most UK machines will have been shipped for use on 220-230v or 240-250v mains power )

On the rear of the MPC3000 near the power supply recepticle is a territory designation sticker.

[A] = AAL ( USA ) – 110 volts.
[B] = BEAB ( ENGLAND ) – 220-230 volts.
[C] = CSA ( CANADA ) – 110 volts.
[E] = CEE ( EUROPE ) – 220-230 volts.
[J] = JPN ( JAPAN ) – 100 volts.
[S] = SAA ( AUSTRALIA ) – 240-250 volts.
[U] = U/T ( UNIVERSAL WORLD AREA ) 100/110/220-230/240-250 volts.
[V] = VDE ( GERMANY ) – 220-230 volts.
[Y] = CUSTOM – per custom supply documentation.

A model suitable for use with in Australia will have:

[S] some where in the territory designation list.

My machine has [E][V][B][S] on the sticker.

The transformer is marked/stamped similarly.

At the very least for use in Australia you would need the machine to meet
[E], [V] or [B] voltage compatibility.

[U] and [Y] designations are not common.

[U] "Universal" designations are not common on MPC3000 machines.

So in answer ...... the best option would be to get a machine with an [E][V][B][S] ( or at least [E][V][B] ) designation so that you may connect it straight to our Australian mains power, without the bollocks and hassle of a step down transformer.

Just while we're on this topic.

While working on a friends recently aquired MPC3000 I noticed it's territory designation to be [E]. ( not surprising that the previous AKAI Australian distributor got one allocated from a French shipment for a local producer. ).

Opening the machine up revealed a fairly new looking [E][V][B][S] stamped transformer, connected to the wrong power supply board socket.

Connected as if the machine was to be run in a 220v-230v mains environment.

Typical ...

This wrong connection has since been fixed.

My 3000LE is marked [E][V] on the back, I guess I should check the transformer and it's wiring too. Any info on how it should be hooked up?

So, I checked my power supply, and yep, as you found, the rear outside of the MPC case is marked [E][V], but the transformer is marked [E][V][B][S], and the transformer is connected to the P853 connector on the lower power supply PCB, when it should be connected to the P854 connector, the position for which is right next to P853 and marked as [B][S].

So, is all that is invloved the desoldering of the connector from P853 and resoldering to P854? Is there anything else that needs to be done, fuse changes, soldered jumpers changed, etc.?

What is the difference in terms of any effects to the MPC3000, does it damage it by running at the incorrect power to how it is connected, does it run cooler on the right connector, will long term reliability be improved on the right connector, etc.?

From over voltage at the input ?

Excess heat.

Before you go changing anything I'll have a look how mine is set up and check with a few others too.

On checking my machine.

The territory mains power designation is marked on the rear as [E][V][B][S] .

The internal mains transformer is marked as [E][V][B][S].

The transformer line connection is to socket 854 marked [B][S].
