Reviews and questions about the entry-level MPC500
By chris45 Sun Feb 11, 2007 3:49 pm
hi,
i bought me a mpc 500 3 weeks ago. 8)
I mainly use it as sequencer and I connected it via midi to my PC to use it with NI kontakt.
It works quit nice but I usually don't make beats at my home.

so my question:
is there a way to convert *.gig or *.wav files to *.pgm files?
I tried bluebox but it would take hours to do the job and cdextract hasn't pgm output.

any help appreciated

i dunno what .gig files are, but wav files and pgm files are different things my friend. you need to read the manual on how the MPC works and the data structures within.

i'll get you started though, a PGM is a program, that tells the MPC what sounds are assigned to what pads, and the settings for each pad (volume, pan, filter, velocity settings, etc...)

now as much as it hurts, go read the manual. you can cop it online if you don't have a real copy.

I think you can extract the .wav files from a .gig file and create a program map from it with Chicken Systems Translator. Last time I checked, I think that conversion was still in beta, so it problem doesn't work 100%. Also, bear in mind that Gigasampler's mapping has a lot more features than the MPC program, so it'll never be a perfect translation.

If you just want to extract .wav files from .gig files, both Chicken Systems and Extreme Sample Convertor will do that. You could then map the .wav files in the MPC yourself.

Actually, I just checked on the Chicken Systems site, it can't do it yet, but it is being beta tested.

Still, probably easiest to just extract the .wav files and make your own program.
