what are some good drum kits to buy?

Are you talking about actual physical kits/sets or samples? I can't help with samples.

haha lmao, man everytime I look for gear on ebay you see these pics of cd/zip sets and they all say there are used some famous producer like just blaze, neptunes, Timbaland, Dre, rza, etc. c'mon yea freaking right. I wanna see a recipt that say these producers are buying these sounds. I am not a big fan of buying sound sets. I like to make my own sound, even if its sampled or from a machine, or software I will tweak the hell out of them so nobody sounds like me, hell I don't even have two beats that sound the same. some years back I experimented with acid(no pun intended) I chucked the sounds that were included in the program and used it not unlike a mpc by importing my own sounds from cd or recording lp's into the sound card. I have to admit I 'm one of the lucky ones, I have about 2000 lp's, (started collecting in '99), a bunch of sound modules and plus I work with a partner who uses alot of software and plug-ins so I'm never really strapped for sounds.

Any sound is right, just as long as it leads to good results. And "good" is very subjective anyway. I also wouldn't be too surprised if the Neptunes used sample CDs since it's all really not that original. They basically use the same sounds as everybody else, but happen to hang out with the right crowd. Well, for their purpose anyway, which is makin' money

I aint trying to offend you... there are individaul slice drum sounds on lp's as well you can buy (lumber jack beats and slammin records' crackerbeats vol sets just to name a few).. I have nothing against cd's . just tweak whatever you use. what if we brought the same collection of sounds on cd, lp,tape, whatever. we have to make our music personal. I even sample from old cheap drum machines and tweak eq, layer, decay, downsample, and the whole nine to shape my own sound. thats just one way I do it. nothing wrong with using cd's. the reason I stay away from them bcuz alot of the one I see are soo expensive. the ones I see out there range from 40bucks or more a pops. I can buy a breakbeat record for 5bucks from a record shop like beatstreet ,music -factory, or Rock & Soul in NYC or a old school joint for a quarter from a goodwill store downsouth. I started as a dj b4 I even knew what an mpc was so records work for me. use what you use and be the better man for it. peace fam

Yeeaa, I understand what your saying. I don't use cd's, I'm strictly vinyl. I started out too, scartching and the only reason I got an mpc besides musical experimentation, was because I was tired of drumming on the tables, it's too tedious. In cotrast though I enjoyed the sounds of the drums on the tables. So I want that acoustic hard drum sample(s). But I suppose there is no getting around it I have to chop.

I thought you was talking about real drum kits. I guess not. I don't do commercial sample products.

But now that you're saying you want that "acoustic" sound, why not get a real drum kit or individual pieces if budget and space permits? Sample those or if you don't play, get someone who does or learn. That, I can help with....picking an ill pre-fab or custom kit.

sample your own drums. i recorded myself bangin' some keys and a metal bottle together. lol
