Does anyone know about Formatting Compact Flash Cards???????

Does anyone know about Formatting Compact Flash Cards??????? I have tried over and over and it has failed. First I was told their are two types ---type 1 and type 2. One is high speed which u can"t use. So I bought a third one and it is a San Disk 512 mb. Won't work still!!! I ams still running an earlier OS and it will not let me upgrade unless I format the card to transfer from my computer via usb mpc 1000. If anyone can help please email me.

First, I would suggest you drop whomever is providing you with CF info in favor of an official CF source:

From their FAQ:

"The only difference between CF Type I and CF Type II cards is the card thickness. CF Type I is 3.3 mm thick and CF Type II cards are 5mm thick. A CF Type I card will operate in a CF Type I or CF Type II slot. A CF Type II card will only fit in a CF Type II slot. The electrical interfaces are identical."

That info aside, I can't really ascertain your problem with the info you've provided, except to say that you might have a defective card or card reader -- not exactly an unheard of problem around here. What actually happens when you try to format the card in the MPC 1000?

yeah, you might have a bad card reader... another solution would be to go pick up a usb multi card reader and try formatting it on your computer. I found a place locally (detroit) that also does internet orders that sells cards and readers very cheap. i just picked up a card reader for 10bucks and a 2gb card for 15bucks.

(the prices went up a few dollars, but still cheap)

as it was already mentioned... card readers can go bad, and will.

To my understanding, there are differences between the Akai and standard PC formatting routines. This is why the MPC manual tells you to format on the 1000 before trying to save anything. You can try it but don't be surprised if you run into problems going that route...
