XL - data storage - card reader - need info please guys...

ok. had an XL for about 5 yrs... and the drive situation is gotten too much for me now....
had zip drive, died..... another zip drive... died. ... 3rd zip drive.... DIED....
so --- got an external hardrive... that died .got ANOTHER external HD - that died too (and electrocuted me pretty badly before hand...lol)

so the final thing i invested in. a jazz drive with 2gb discs. this was fine, until thats starting to f**k up now. i made backup discs, and im gettin it now where the original AND backup discs are messing up and im loosing too much data.

I'VE HAD ENOUGH! was gonna change to 1000black so i can pc - mp for data, but the pads seem real dodgy from what i have read here....

anyways... has anyone from the UK here installed a card reader on the XL? http://home.tiscali.nl/~smeyer/mpc/ - the german link on here seems real cool, thanks for that... . mine has the floppy drive still inside, so do i HAVE to solder? or can i just get a cable that works and fits to connect the new card reader too?

sorry, i have used the search function. and the links so far have been usefull. beleive me... today is the 1st time i have ever heard you can install card reader to XL - i was going to buy a 1000 2morro too... now im sticking with the XL if i can transfer from pc to MP easily for sure.. now i just gotta figure out how to make this transaction ...

Damn sorry to hear that man. once that 1st zip would had went dead I would have jumped to a card reader. I got one installed the 1st week of new years and loving it here is a useful page with links about card readers faq and mpcs

lamp dog, I've looked through those links you always post on this topic, and I only get more confused. I have the 2kxl with a floppy drive. I have seen the page that shows you how to put it in, so I know about the power cable / taping the wires situation, and I know that i will need an internal IDE cable.

My question is about the card reader itself. So, I think I need a card reader that connects with IDE. If I google "IDE multi card reader," can I just buy any one I find? Then, I upgrade the os, format my cards in fat, and it should be all good. Sorry if I'm dumb. I got into this to make music not to be a computer tech.

The drive has GOT to support ATAPI. Many of them will say IDE, but not all will say ATAPI. You will need an IDE cable that does not have one of the holes blocked in the middle(got to a store and look at the cables - you will see what I mean). Other than that, get some solderless crimp connectors from any auto parts store, and a pair of crimpers, and take the red and black wire going to the old floppy, and splice the wires with the wires going to the new card reader(you will need to get that cable too - it's the same power cable computers have been using for 20 years). Best thing is to get these parts from a used computer store. I did mine for way under $100.

from what I can tell, I followed all of these steps correctly, however, when I turn the MP on, it doesn't recognize the drive. I scroll thru the 'devices' and I get scsi 1-7, F-Rom, and *no floppy drive*. ATAPI does not show up. What am I doing wrong?

yea i never knew these card readers existed! havent had the internet for quite some time.
damn lucky becuase i was 24 hours away from buying a 1000, just for the usb ability. very glad i didnt now...

i'll let everyone know how installation went/goes, and maybe get some pics up of stages and parts used...

Just out of curiosity...Why? Just financially or preference?

I've got an xl myself and really happy with it but sometimes I think I should've bought the 1000 because of the extra features like the usb and hard drive and so on...Grass is always greener blah blah blah

well.... i love XL, i have no problems with it at all. the ONLY problem was the pure hassle i;ve had for ages, the SCSI thing. i have lost so much data ...

so the only reason i was gonna get the 1000, was so i can have the security of storing on my PC HD via USB. then i heard about the dodgy manufacturing of the pads which made me feel i was going to be paying for a machine that isnt as good as the XL. i have played around on the 1000, and the pads didnt feel as good as the XL by far... (IMO)

But now with the card reader, i can save to compact flash, and then archive the session on my PC HD str8 away which is a **** dream! i really didnt know about this card reader shit up until 2 nights ago, ... i now have a spare £700 from what i saved to buy the 1000

once i have mine fitted, i can take the pleasure of smashing my jazzdrive to peices with a hammer. (once ive stored as many sessions fom discs that i can of course...)

And are there also differences in feel between the 2000 (xl) and the 60 and 3000?

yea the differences between the models you mention , i'm not aware of, as i've only used an XL and 1000.....

im kinda jinxed when it comes to tech... the sheer amount of SCSI problems ive had is huge... but anything i buy brand new is always broken!

mpc - brand new - broken..! brand new zip - broken ! digi cam - broken! i-pod - broken! printer for pc - broken! mini disc - yup - broken! just happens time and time again with me i'm kinda used to it now...
just hope this reader thing goes smooth!

installed it and everything worked without flaw. i had previously upgraded to an internal SCSI Zip and had modded the power connections. i knew it would load faster, but man, it pulled 5MB of samples in under a 1minute - with the Zip, that would have taken 5 minutes easy.

best $50 i've ever spent, except that one time in Bancock....

ahhh good stuff, thats the exact model i ordered online today. if i have any probs installing, you might get a message from me... ahhaha
