Talk and share knowledge on rare records, sources of new samples, vinyl, diggin, etc

how do you feel about sharing your secret weapons? seems like alot of people share samples/sources on the net. i used to share records and samples with friends, but i'm becoming less and less generous. im not talking about played, sampled to death 'rare grooves', but something you find thats unusual and inspiring. sampling's become pretty much redundant, everybodys using similar sounds/genres. for people who talk alot of sh it(like me), its hard to keep quiet, but thats what makes it special.

Word. I often wish to talk about the multiple dead opposum corspes I keep bundled in 1940's style Egyptian sand rugs in my basement, but I've come to conclusion that it's best kept a secret. Oh wait. Oops.

Fo reals, if your just using a 2 bar sample and putting drums on it, then your not really making music !!! And pretty much 70% of hip hop beats are that right now. Yous gots to chop! I myself started of playing guitar and piano before i got into making beats and i see using melody samples from old records or whervever as the very least you can do creatively in making music. Either Chop it the hell up or learn your self a string or wind instrument. Same goes for drums, but not really doe.

have u been listening to hiphop over the last 20 years? Looping has always been the way to go. i mean sure you might chop it up sometimes, but finding dope parts in a song and looping them to make your own vibe in a beat has always been present and will always. You cant say thats not making music cus thats how hiphop started. unless u think hiphop is not music that is

I understand what your saying but thats how hiphop started right? But this isnt the late 80's anymore. We are not limited to only turntables and a mic no more. Most of us have hella advanced technology in our home studios. Hella keyboards and Samplers with unlimeted possiblities but still many choose to just loop up some shit they think is hot and lace some drums on it. C'mon now, its not 1994 anymore

aren't you supposed to do exactly what sounds hot to you? you shouldn't give a fck what anyone else says if you're feeling it.

some people only loop because that's all they know, while some people choose to loop.. you also need musical ear for isolating loops, a loop doesn't need to be the opening break of a funk 7"

besides looping a dope sample doesn't mean i won't chop up an estonian rock record if it really has sounds

way too often a great break is spoiled by chopping it and trying to rearrange it, resulting in a catastrophy.

of course if possible you should try to add stuff to the loop tho, horn stabs or guitar licks or whatever and add change ups to keep it interesting.

it ain't 94 anymore, that's true. but to not turn a good break into a dope beat simply because it's 2007 is just stupid.

I feel you on that but my argument was more on sampling melodys and riffs. If people just loop up some melody of an old jazz/funk/soul record and maybe pitch it up, fools now think there job is done. But for breaks it can go either way, sh!t i still dig for breaks.

still it takes talent and ear to find some melodies or riffs... a straight two bar loop that's actually starting from the middle of a bar, from a 15 minute, odd time signature free jazz session that you need to sample through the left channel because on the right channel the saxophone is mixed way too high etc etc..

If thats your idea of puttin in work, then i have more respect for a 7th grader learning the flute in music class. Thats just the technical side of sampling not the creative side.

well we can argue all day and night about this. when it comes down to it, its just opinions.

if you have an ear for music you do, and if u dont u dont
