retarded question about midi

i know some people are using midi files they ve found on the internet when making music they alter them and stuff. how do you go about to do this?i know basics of midi like hooking the synth up to the mpc etc. i have a mpc 1000 and a micron and have a program called midiox on my pc which i use to update my micron from time to time. have the jj os any impact on this kinda situation? any help is welcome. cheers

you mean download preprogrammed midi files from the internet and "sample" the midi?

but it's an interesting idea

a MIDI file is just basically performance data. if you get it off the internet it was most likely written to send program changes for a General MIDI synth chip, say for a website that has music. most computers have at the least some sort of soft synth for this application. go study up on the General MIDI program set and you will be able to figure out how to pull out the string or piano performances from the MIDI file, then throw it in your sequencer of choice, assign the data to your instrument of choice, and hack away.....

when you say "throw it in your sequencer" have you done that with the mpc? i get the concept with soft synths playing midi files. however i am more intrested in learning to know how to do this with a mpc specifically. kinda like what nym says: "sampling midi".cheers

find some *.mid files
load it to your HD/CF
load *.mid file into (unused) sequence

of course you need to assign sounds that are similar to the GM sounds on your soundblaster or whatnot.

there are very few retarded questions about MIDI

yeah when you load the midi file into a sequence, it will have notes but it won't have a proper program set up to play them

you have to set each channel/track to have the right instrument (including right piece of drum kit on right pad)

and for chromatic instruments you would need to set up a chromatic program for that channel/track

best to start off with a simple midi file that only contains one instrument or one drum kit playing something

the drums will probably use the 'general midi drum kit assignment' i think, so google that
