Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Hi all,
I just got a 2000xl (old model)with a mcd installed. It was done supposedly by forat and the seller claims it hasn't been used at all. I looked through the manual before I decided to post, but I'm still left with no answers. I tried to first load a program with samples on the mpc. I saw the samples loading and went to the main screen after it loaded. No response from any pads. (I was careful to name them all within the 8 letter limit, my sd card was formatted on my laptop using xp with the fat format. I tried to go fat16 but my only other option was fat32). Next I tried sampling beats off of vinyl and I could hear the sample play fine when I press play in the sampling menu. I assign the sample to a pad and go to the main screen after this, the pad won't sound. I've tried to place the sample on different pads too. I've tried to assign a sample from disk to a individual pad but still no luck. I've also looked into the secret menu and attempted to test the pads there. If the pad number doesn't change when I press a different pad, that's a bad sign right? The jog and slider value changes when I move it but not the pad number. It's stuck at 70. Can anyone tell me if my mpc is busted or am I overlooking something obvious? Thanks in advance...

when u say audition, do u mean adobe audition? so your files are loading ok into the mpc, but you cant assign any to a pad?
when in the params menu, each time you hit a pad, the pad location/number changes? if it doesnt then seems summits up with them...?

no I didn't mean adobe audition, I just meant I could hear the sample in the sample screen when I pressed play. As far as I know the samples are loading fine. I even checked to see if the right note was assigned to the pad. when I get to the pad check menu, the pad number is stuck on 70 and it won't change no matter what pad I press on. The slider value and jog numbers change fine.

i forgot about the pad check menu, remind of where that is please?

"the pad number is stuck on 70 and it won't change no matter what pad I press on" - this seems like sumits up with the pads for sure.

I got to this secret menu by pressing shift + 5, then shift +F1, then selecting memcheck, then selecting padcheck. I think the source was from mpc2000xl.com or something...

just checked that pad check screen - (neevr seen it before)
and yes, it should show which pad your hitting, 1 to 64.
seems like your pads aint working then. also stuck on 70? thats weird as the XL is numbered 1 to 64?!

try renaming a sequence using the pads to sift through the letters. if that doesnt work then your pads are messed up. i had four of my pads take a shi$ on me too. its an easy fix though. if it turns out your pads are bad, just order a new sensor screen. take the top cover and the front face off the mpc. remove the rubber pads. there is a plastic piece where the sensor screen feeds into. just pull out on the section of that piece that moves and pull out the ribbon piece of the sensor screen. then just peel off the screen. then line up the new one with the marks and holes where the old one was. the new one isnt super sticky so its easy to apply correctly in one shot. put the new ribbon into the black plastic piece and push the part that moves back in. then your good to go. i just went through this. the part cost me $89. you can order the part from a place called vst in la. try www.vst.com. i think thats the web address. its called virtual sound technology. good luck

The seller put me on the phone with bruce forat and he confirmed that the pads were not working properly. I have no idea if there's a padchk menu on the 2000. But that unit is getting returned and I'll be looking for a 4000 when I get my refund.
