protools knows only midi time code, how can i syncronize protools and mpc ?
By Ellz26 Fri Mar 26, 2004 3:55 am
Recently i went to a studio that used pro tools and the engineer said that the mpc1000 uses a midi clock, not time code. These two arent compatible. We cheated it, and pulled off what we had to do, but it wasn't the correct way to do it. I asked him if its possible at all to sync it with pro tools, he said there is a way, he just didnt have the technology at hand to do so.

Well, this is bad news. I was planning on purchasing an MPC1000 and Digi002 with the same buy, but I'm glad I read this. What is the "cheat" meathod that you used Ellz? And it worked?

By Ellz26 Fri Mar 26, 2004 4:30 am
What we did was a very cheap method of cheating. We would play the first 2 or 4 bars on protools with just a metronome sound, we would then time it almost perfectly, and manually hit play on the mpc. He had the digi 001 , maybe the 002 is compatible with midi clock.[/b][/i]

You could sync the Digi002 with the MPC the slave but not as the Master. or at least I don't know hot to do it

I thought I remember a buddy of mine who uses Protools used Midi Clock to do this before so I had a look. I don't use Protools myself but Nuendo works for me. Here are a couple blurbs from the Digidesign answerbase. I believe this insinuates that Protools does do Midi Clock. Hope this helps you.

What internal sync mode do I set the AKAI MPC series sequencer to use with Pro Tools?

Set the MPC to receive M.Clock with song position pointer.
In OMS create a device that is the MPC and connect it to your MIDI interface. In Pro Tools, under the MIDI menu go to MIDI Beat Clock pop up and enable MIDI Beat clock and the MPC
Put the MPC in song mode. From Pro Tools transport you can now control MPC's tempo and song position.

Hope this helps

How do I sync the Akai MPC 2000 (drum machine sequencer) with Pro Tools?

1) As of this writing MIDI Beat Clock, although not providing positional information is the fastest for lock up. The following setup is for both MTC and Midi Beat Clock. (when using MTC provide a bar or two or pre-roll)
2) 2) With Pro Tools LE version 5.0, you'll need a standalone MIDI interface as the 001's MIDI OUT does not pass MIDI Time Code or MIDI Beat Clock. This was fixed in Pro Tools LE 5.0.1 and later.
3) Verify the MPC 2000 device in OMS ; receive/send MTC and MIDI Beat Clock are checked;" is controller" and "is multitimbral" are checked
4) Pro Tools > Peripherals > Sync > Generic MTC > port= MTP AV (or, other MIDI Interface of choice)
5) Session setup> FR=30 and MTC to port = MPC 2000
6) MPC2000>MIDI Sync>Frame Rate=30, MIDI Clock (stands for MIDI Beat Clock; Choose either MTC or MIDI Beat clock here), receive MMC=off, Port 1 (There are 2 MIDI INS and 2 MIDI outs on the MPC 2000; VERIFY the MIDI cable going from the MIDI interface into either MIDI IN Port 1 or MIDI IN Port 2 corresponds to the Port selected on the MPC 2000's Midi sync menu)
7) press PLAY on the MPC 2000 (it will wait for sync from Pro Tools
8) press PLAY on Pro Tools; it will trigger the MPC 2000.

SORRY TO TELL U THIS I HAVE A MPC 1000 AND I HAVE PRO TOOLS LE AND IT WORKS FINE TOGATHER WHEN I HIT PLAY ON PRO TOOLS THE MPC STARTS TO PLAY TO SO UR MAN DIDN'T KNOW WHAT HE WAS DOING TELL HIM TO READ THE MPC 1000 BOOK BEFOUR TRYING TO TRACK A BEAT...

You also might want to add a blank measure at the start as this gives the master and slave a chance to fully sync before the music starts. Maybe Mike41 can verify this as he is using this setup. I know it helps on my setup. Good luck
