shure 44-7 needle on technic 1200's//WHAT'S YOUR SETTINGS???

i've had these needles for a long time, and i still find them kinda jumpy.
anyone got any advice??
what settings do you use?

height/weight/etc...

Can't help you there because my needles got stolen at a gig a few years back and now I got the stanton headshells instead of the technics headshells and that makes a difference in settings...

I just experimented for an hour or so with different settings...

1st you gotta make sure your sl's are levelled...

anti skating = 0
the height of your arm should be set so that the arm is horizontal, not at an angle

and don't put too much weight on the arm...

you can always angle the shells so that they're pointed to the point where the arm is attached to the deck but doing that will **** up your records...

yeah, thats dumb azz advice.

the tonearm should be evenly horizontal.

my settings:

skate = 0

height = 4

weight = 2.5g

they usually dont get any skips unless i'm stabbing with the up gains (and i think this is due to my table not being very stable)

try letting your needles rest on the inner part of a record (of some trash wax) when your not using them for a few days.

i recently got new stylii and had a hell of a time with skips...i let them rest on some wax for a few nights and they broke-in perfect.

lots of people do this. they angle the cartridges on the headshell so that
the needle is at angle with the tonearm making it touch the record like a straight arm tonearm angle instead of the normal s shaped tonearm on the 1200. never messed with it cause i heard it kills your records.

dont ever do that. simple geometry tells you its not the same as straight arm. dont the 447 stick well as it is?

most people go by feel, i usually let it track harder when i'm cutting, but for sampling i ease the weight off just a bit

but

i never let the stylus holder touch the record or have it pressing too hard on the record..

447 track better with less weight, to a point obviously. try to stay on the lower end of shures recomended limit. if your needle jumps with 2-3 grams, its probably not the setup you should be worried about. minimize any weight directly over the needle. take the shield off and dont even bother with the extra weight. weight should be in the back of the arm, not on the headshell.

just double checked both decks, both are at height = 4.

never realized it, but i guess it is high.

being a newb when i picked these up i guess thats why...can't remember.

8 years later, they're still at the same height.

i may have to experiement now...damn, haha.

I've tried it once and it really helps if you're really into skratching a lot. The needles skip less but they really kill your records like that. A lot of battle cats I know are doing that.

If you set them up properly and not at an angle, they won't skip either.

Yea, like peezie pointed out already, from a technical point of view it doesn't make any difference with respect to skating. The only change is that your needle doesn't sit right in the groove anymore, degrading channel separation and wear.
