hey guys... well i went through most of this post ! And i got a lot of great info.. and thank you for that. but buying new pads like the ones from VST Seems like the way to go for me though.. but i got a couple of questions i may have missed underway..
1. Are the replacement pads as durable and functional as the other mpc's.. or as durable as the 1000 should have been.. ?
2. Is VST the only place where you can buy it? id like to buy it in europe.. but the only thing i found was a french place where it cost 450 euros.. and thats crazy compared to 100 bucks!!!

to my understanding they are the exact replacements from AKAI, which will break as well. so they are the same ones the MPC1k comes with originaly.

doesnt the MPC500 have only 12 pads as opposed to the 16 on the MPC1k?

yeah that's true Al-eye, and I also read here in the forum that the pad design is like the older mpc's before mpc1k. the pads have the same shape as on mpc1k, but the stuff underneath is alot better.
so Anonym, let's hope your solution soon will replace those crappy pads in our mpc1k's

you've just described down to the T one of my earlier prototypes. this was the velostat/vinyl solution. it was great - a little unpredictable (problem with ghost notes) but it worked because the velostat triggered notes at VERY VERY low pressure.
the problem came later - about a week/two after using the velostat/vinyl. the velostat started weakening. something about the physical properties of that material weaken over time until finally you're left with something that doesn't conduct no matter what the pressure.
velostat is excellent while it works, but between the ghostnoting (partially due to the original pad rubber hardness) and the whole "wearing out" thing, i decided to not use velostat.
nice thinking though. had that solution worked, it could have cost something like 20 dollars to do.
