In short:: if you have trouble transferring your files from your XL to your pc, use MPC editor to format your CF card...
So recently I installed a card reader with OS 1.14 and it worked perfectly except that it could only handle partitions of 512MB max. I wanted to get a 512MB card but they only had 1GB cards so I thought fvck it and I bought a 1GB card.
Anyways, I just bought a usb card reader for my laptop so I could transfer files between the mpc and my laptop and specifically because I wanted to upgrade to OS 1.20 (my floppy drive was out by then so I needed to upgrade the OS by memory card).
Got home and it didn't work. I had already written some files to the CF card on the mpc and when I inserted the card into my new card reader for my laptop, it just said "that card is in RAW format and I can't do sh*t with it".
After half an hour or so of experimenting, I downloaded mpc editor which did the trick great. I just formatted the card and now I can read and write it from my mpc and my laptop.
I transferred the OS 1.20 file from my laptop to the card, loaded in my mpc and it worked like a charm.
If you have trouble with reading/writing CF cards on your mpc and pc, format it with mpc editor!
