Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By sadmachines0 Sat Mar 03, 2007 3:47 pm
I'm repairing, or at least attempting to repair, an MPC2000 for a customer. It was giving the error "Insert MPC2000 Disk !" even when the disk was in the floppy drive. Our first thought was to swap the floppy drive out. Done. Tried again. Same message. Called Akai. They suggested getting a clean floppy with the latest OS, which they promptly shipped to me for free! Just got it today, and guess what? Same deal!!

Any suggestions on what to do about this? Here is exactly what it says when it boots:

"MPC2000 Boot ROM v1.00

SCSI:7:

Insert MPC2000 Disk !"

That's the usual set of messages when you have no floppy in the drive.
Does the floppy drive make any noise when it is trying to boot?
If not, check the power cable to the drive is ok.
Try another ribbon cable if you have one.

If still no luck, try downloading the OS from

http://www.akaipro.com/archive_os/2_mpc2kv172.zip

and unzip it onto a freshly formatted new floppy.

Can't help you any further than that I'm afraid.
Hope it works out.

imo i think the floppy drive is dead. Try a new floppy disk first tho.

I was worried that was the case. I've tried two different drives, but perhaps it's the cables. I'll give it a try. Thanks!

Did you try to boot from a scsi device instead of the floppy drive?
