Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By UNSYSTEMATIC Sun Mar 28, 2004 12:04 am
I just got my monthly mag. from a music store and was checking out what the new MPC 2000xl looked like. There was some info on it that reads different compared to the white 2kxl. I notice there was more note capacity and multitrack recording was mentioned. It also has resampling capabilities? Does the white 2kxl have that?

As far as I know, the only difference is that the Blue 2KXL ships with a 100 meg zip drive STANDARD (at least Stateside). Everything else is the same (besides the color of course)

are the new features meant to be compared to what the difference is between the 2k and 2kxl? I'm a MPC 60 owner, so I don't know much about the 2kxl. Lately, I've been checking out the 2000xl because the ppq resolution is higher than the 60. I use quantize sometimes, but usually lay out my beats without the the quantize function on, so the resolution would help me out. I tried checking one out at my nearest music store, but they didn't have one hooked up, and the damn salesman couldn't find the plug for the demo.

You're right ... I swear I read somewhere that all blue US 2KXL's are shipping with stock zip drives ... but not according to Akai :-P

As for your quantize question .. the 2kxl does 96 parts per 1/4th note ... and of course there is always the trick of doubling your tempo if you need more ... but I havent noticed a need to do this on the 2kxl :) It records really well, as long as you don't get the dreaded double note when you hit the pad (they are so sensitive sometimes they recognize your finger as being 2 hits of the pad).

I think the only reason Akai made the blue version of the MPC was because the new MPC1000 was blue, and that computer beige color was pretty damn boring IMHO :) I think they changed the colors of the rest of their stuff too. They are probably going for product recognition. When you see a bright red keyboard on stage you know its probably a Nord Lead ... that sorta thing. I have zero knowledge on the normal 2K though, sorry :(

There's no difference between the purple 2kxlse(1? or 3?) and white standard 2kxl. Mine is orange 2kxlse2 and I swear my beats come out tangy sometimes, hehe..

Call me dull, but I like the boring beige look of my 2k classic.

I also have a moustache. Go figure.
