I would think that if the unofficial OS damaged MPCs, Akai would quickly shut them down or post a warning on their site advising against using the OS. So far, there hasn't been any reports that an MPC was damaged because of the unofficial OS.
I believe I paid enough money for my MPC 2500. With that said, I feel I am entitled to a solid OS and that additional functions beyond the current advertised feature set is just icing on the cake. I don't believe Akai owes us further development of any MPC as long as it does exactly what it is advertised to do. Do I want more features....hell yes. Should I have to pay for them? I would like them to be free but I will pay for them as I have with other music production tools.
