I have allways had a soft spot for Boom Bap beats and though i would start a thread that helps defines the production techniques that i have used to make Boom Bap. Not to mention i would love to here what other producers have to contribute to this FAQ from there experiences.

Will post my techniques up soon !!

nice thread :)
To me..
01. grimey drums (resampling techniques,cassete noise addition,layering,compressing..)
02. not-so quantized drum patterns (swing,different velocities..)
03. add the BOOM to the BAP..with sub basses.
04. small chopped stabs/vocal hits..8 or 12 bit..with some delay..for the essence of 1994..especially the saxophone licks..hehe 8)
05. descent final mixdown..because of the dirtiness and the low/mid frequencies you gonna deal with.
06. a nice MC to spit over..not a corny-a$$ nerd..hehe

this is some good stuff. delay is a good effect to add to small chops. what about different velocities and low/mid freq. could you elaborate on these techniqes a little more lecter?

I dont think you can sum it up any better than that.

Grimey, Swingin, and Minimilistic. Thats it.

my machine of choice for boom bap is a sp-404 aka baby boom bap

it doesnt take much knowledge, its just playing whats in ur head and usually a little fx expermenting to make it filthy , but dont od cuz it still needs to sound proffesional.

one thing i find myself doing often is resampling the same drum hit twice(usually kik and hats) and trimming it differently, so the drum hit doesnt sound exactly the same every time it hits. i keep away from attack and decay
