i've never been an enormous 16 levels fan. i do use autochromatic, however. i don't use 16 levels for much except one thing (explained later) for everything else i just use qlinks. instead of 16 level attack i just use qlink attack, same with everything else i'd be doing...the one thing i do use 16 levels for sometimes is Layer, since it corresponds with 4 so well.

am i missing out on something here?

the only other thing is start point. you can get 'sort of' chops with it, no biggie though.

i use it since my retarded ass cant figure out how to record the qlink movements.

plus its also easier to do deep top / kick variations like in that "i like my beat down low" for example... much easier with 16 levels to do varying kicks than it is to automate that. imo

anyone enlighten me?

i would probably use it more if it controlled some other parameter other than our 1 qlink data slot per each note on item

it's the same with track mutes - i just use qlink set to realtime level and drop/bring it back up as necessary.

i use qlinks so much, for practically everything...

still figuring out if i'm gonna buy a microkorg

I still use 16 levels to put a sound across the pads by velocity or by tuning. Old habit, been doing this since day one on my MPC's..

if i can make a suggestion get a nord lead or a virus synth. You can get a used nord or virus for less then a new mirco korg...
With a little research you might see my point.

Can you pick start-point in 16 levels now? or is that using velocity start offset?

It would be nice if there was a start point mode in 16 levels, especially if you could define the start point of each pad.

I've been using 16 levels for tuning... it's pretty cool to use with patched phrases.

yeah velocity start offset, not great, but fun for a while. bit like hookers, then.

so is there an advantage of one or the other 16 levels vs. autochromatic?

^^^^
one thing that can happen when playing a pads tune in 16 levels is that you get notes cutting each other off as they overlap, because the "note off" message for the pad will affect all pads in 16 level mode. For example, if youre in 16 level tune mode, and you press and hold pad 1, and then tap any of the other pads, the pad one will stop even if you're still holding it down. Unless the pad is set to one-shot.

To me that's the big limitation of 16 level tune mode vs. autochromatic, besides the larger range with autochromatic programs.

i could also get a second hand microkorg.. their listed like crazy!

But can you tell me what's good about a nord lead or virus synth? got a link or something?

I own a nord lead 2 a virus rack (just sold due to wanting a desktop 3u version) and owned a ms2000r (sold as it was the lesser of the units same engine in the microkorg within reason).

My 2cents

The nord is the easiest va i have ever used amazing tool. Has no effects but i love it for its raw sound. BEAUTIFUL 4 voices only

The virus (sold) to replace with a version with more controllers. best sounding va ive heard till you remove the effects from it (then i like the nord) But i will buy another of these.

The ms2000 (i would buy one of these over the microkorg as they are more powerful). It doesn't match to my other va's so i sold i will not buy again. Its powerful sounds nice but just lacks what the others have. I loved the sequencer for pitch changes lfos etc in realtime. 4 Voices again

I also own a Nova11 X

Mr Hassal is right check out the other 2 they rock over the microkorg just depends wether you need a midi controller.

All are good but if i were after a va from korg i'd probably look at the radius. I have 2 va's now and will get another virus when funds are good so the radius i don't need.

I also have a triton sample based synth which i adore which shows i don't have anything against korg but just find the ms series and micro are out done by other manufacturers

thanks for the info..

but actually i'm looking for something to create nice sounding basslines and maybe some dark sounds or some shit to just fux around with to make some crazy shit..

anyway, i don't like doing bass in the mpc it selfs because i never like the sound of the bass you get.. well most of the time.. i usually sample some bass sounds from my mini monster(mini moog vsti)(my has too big latency for midi controlling) and then assign it to a program to make my bass.. but for some reason, it doesn't sound as good when im just playing along with my beat from the vsti itself..
