MPC 500 is a small sampler / drum machine.
MPD 24 is a 16 pad controller via midi / usb.
The MPD 24 can be used wuth software, whilst the 500 is more like a hardware standalone.
If you like software for drum programming, you should check out FXp Guru, and you can use it with the MPD 24 just like an mpc for banging out drums and pattern sequencing. Im waiting for my unit to arrive.

This is what I've been wondering too.
I mainly use Logic Pro to make music,
and MPD24 seemed to be nice.
But upon hearing lots of people saying MPD24 is no MPC,
and wanting to get real MPC experience,
I'm deciding on MPC500.
But I'm really curious to know what MPD24 can do.

I have Both but as of now the MPD is like my M-Audio O2 with Pads i havent found the right software to couple with it to get the MPC experience
Battery 3 is close tho still i love the MPC 500 it auto loops everything you play into it and you can punch in like in Protools or Sonar etc. and add stuff to the loop but im still learning the 500 as i just got it last week but i got a good deal on it 650 FLAT no TAX new from Guitar Center and this month if you buy it you get a free 128mb MAX expansion from Akai just fill out the forn send in the UPC and a copy of the receipt and youre good to go! as for good prices on big cf cards try www.chiefvalue.com, or www.Newegg.com. 3day shipping on both. I hope this helps with your decision.

^^^^ They are pretty much right although I would possible suggest checking out a 1000 off ebay and fixing it up as a few people have mentioned on here if you want the stand alone option...
Also, glad someone mentioned battery it is pretty awesome as far as plug ins go... Also I think BFD have a EZ Drummer thing or something, which is like a real drum kit... ....I think
