When I think of boom bap i think Primo, Easy mo be, the 45 king. If there are no samples its not boom bap in my mind.

Boom bap to me is hard drums looped break or chopped .Filtered base .Jazz samples .Loops not really much chopping .Deled horns stabs .A simple arrangement with cuts on the hook and lil grit n hiss. Madlib's quasimoto shit comes to mind.

and grinding is not boom bap. preem is more crunk than griding is boom bap.

what I consider it to be usually uses straight breaks, or programs drums to sound like a break, and imitate the feel of having a real drummer. for the most part, I think it's primarily sample based, whether chopped or looped.

but that's enough analyzing anyways, it's about that hard hitting sound, it's a certain feeling of that 1994 new york funk.

I got agree with al those that say the Neptunes ain't boom bap.
That synthsized crap is played. If you ever here their stuff in club with a decent sound system, it don't even move you like boom bap. Take a real good listen to drop it like it's hot...garbage. You want boom bap, check out the boot camp click, evil-dee and mr. walt, of course preem. Oh yeah domingo, he did a lot of KRS' stuff.

I ain't sayin the Neps is Boom Bap they just made a couple Boom Bap style songs...

the drums stand out and carry the song in Boom Bap type beats and anything beyond drums (piano, horns, etc.) must be simplistic.

Just like y'all said Preemo, Easy Mo, etc make a lot of Boom Bap type beats, although some producers mentioned are a little more of what I consider Chop Bap... that is the drums rival the chop as to what stands out the most in that particular beat.

Now I really could give a f*ck about the Neps, but when it comes to "Grindin" how much do the drums stick out in that song? A whole lot, its the basis of song and stands way above any other musical element.

Just check your history on what Boom Bap really is... I still haven't heard anyone mention the original Boom Bap hip hop beat yet......
