What's the purpose of having a cartidge on a turntable?

Would I need one if I'm just using the turntable to sample?

you need one to do anything w/ your deck besides look at it.

where is the needle at?

it translates bumps in a groove into a electric signal, which is then translated into the sonic signal (the sound).

Add this to the list of questions that are both:

1) completely idiotic
and
2) only mildly related to MPCs.

Okay a cartridge is where the stylus (NEEDLE) is held. Without a cartridge no needle therefore no music. The stylus picks up the groove like dudes post said. The cart is a transducer as say your ear is a transducer. your ear turn vibrations into electrical energy. Same as a mic.

yea well i was always taught to ASK if you have a question. no matter how dumb it may sound. If your scared to ask because it sounds dumb, you'll never know. I wouldnt really care what people thought. There's helpful folks here that would answer your ?'s wit no problem.

True, we've all had those kind of questions before. But I'd say you get one free pass on that type of question, because really you can find out the answer in two minutes on the internet.

That said, I find the best results happen when I glue a couple of eggs cooked overeasy to the tonearm, and dip the needle in ketchup and put it in the yolk. DO NOT scramble the eggs.
