Any tips/techniques for the MPC 1000?

Hi ya'll, i'm a new member 2 this club and 2 da MPC club. Well...I've gone and purchased my hard earned pounds (London cat!) on this beast.
I'm using it in conjuction with a laptop and will be buying 128mb onboard.
So i'm reading the manual but what about all those lovely ways of creating a warm, phat and crunchy sound?

Well you have a sampler, you can try sampling some warm, fat, and crunchy sounds!?! That would be a start. The rest of it is done with signal processing and different recording techniques.

Whar's a signal and how do I process it?
