Midi controller

K I hooked my midi controller into my XL's midi in 1 and my XL's midi out's into my sound module's midi in. The problem is that when I hit keys on the keyboard it doesnt play the sounds from the sound module, and yes I am in midi mode on the mpc track selection. What the controller does instead is turn off tracks and weird stuff. Anyone got a minute to gimme a hand?
