In Theory: Boom Bap

imo neptunes = not boom bap

Check the sampler, it ain't the hardest boom-bap, but notice the difference in the drums on it, and say, um "grindin" Grindin was hip-hop but it wasn't that ole' boom-bap.

IMO that tight azz kick, doubled up, minus the bass, that's the making of boom-bap.

I've got to agree with Cazillac. Most young cats have no idea. I don't wanna change the topic, but when a dudes first glimpse of Hip-Hop is Tupac and Biggie then there's something really wrong. It's hard to explain to younger cats what real hip-hop was if you weren't actually living it. To have beef with a dude, go home and practice a dance move and actually schedule a time and place to battle is completely un-comprehendable if you weren't alive to actually be involved. You can't watch a movie to feel this way because EVERYONE felt the same exact way. When I watch wildstyle or Style-Wars I get the feeling of, "Damn, I remember those days, I really miss that!." Anyone younger than 25 will watch that same movie and think, "That's some cool schyt!" The feeling is nowhere near the same. That's why just listening and having an opinion can't come close to actually experiencing. Being too young to buy tapes and recording shows off the radio was ill! Dancing in the streets to buy batteries and bus fare was ill! Stealing batteries and cans of paint because you didn't make enough change dancing was ill! Buying fat laces, Nike/Puma/sergio-tacchini track suites and creating your own style was ill!
Boom-Bap made us wanna spin on our heads. Boom bap makes you younger kats nod your heads. Big difference.

There are some exceptions to this age rule. I know some younger cats who were put on game by older heads. Its really all about what you were exposed to. I will agree that most younger heads will never know what it was like to turn on mainstream radio and hear Scenario by A Tribe Called Quest

actually a lot of funk music is not based on the 1, even tho most american funk is. fela kuti comes to mind for example, and afrobeat in general.

i don't if i'm entitled to an opinion on this hiphop thing, since i'm a 24year old white european kid, but to me boom bap is the overall feeling that you get from the track, the dirty drums, the samples.. but mostly about the drums carrying the song forward. it's got to have that head-nod factor, something that i would blast in the car and it would make me hit the accelerator without even noticing it.



i think this beat is more boom bap than the ones previously posted.. even tho it's a ruff draft so the sound quality is bad, the mixdown is bad, samples are barely noticeable etc etc you get the idea.. check it out

there are few things i think are more pathetic than aging purists who sit on general store porches shaking their fists at youngsters just because they play "kick the can" by different rules

and it always seems like the youngsters they scold are the wrong ones - the harmless ones, instead of the hordes of "lil's" be them jons, waynes, and that entire school
