filtering drums

whats the secret too filtering drums? sometimes ill sample a kick but you can still hear small amounts of sounds from other instruments ,can they filtered out completly?

that's what you filter have for...Isn't It??

You're better of trying to sample a kick that are left all alone on the track.
Imagine this; If you sample a kick with a cello on top of it (for instance) and you try to filter out the cello, then you also filter out freqs that covers the kick...Try to find "clean" samples of the percussion sounds instead.

i say keep the the drt in it... see what direction it takes you you can always replace the kick later...

What Nito said. Basically do a lil more diggin and search throughout the track on the record or sound source. Try n find clean or cleaner hits.

Just a theory (have yet to try) but:

What freq's do you think the other inst's lie on. If they are high pitched then use a low pass, if they are low pitched use a high pass. Filter out the unwanted sounds as much as possible, try adjusting the resonance so you hit the kick freqs a much as possible.

Layer with another version that has a bandpass and again try n find those kick freq's.

Which ever layer sounds more along the lines of the kick you want. Make louder or try compressing and normalizing that layer. Apply EQ's as well to make it more prominent. Otherwise make the low pass version louder and compressed to cover the bandpass version. You might end up with a fatter kick that will cover the unwanted freqs on the other layer.

Let us know the results because this is actually something I haven't really tried yet for a drum hit, just something I thought about while reading your post.
