as someone mentioned before I can't forget T-La Rocks "It's Yours" (1981) produced by Rick Rubin as the joint which started the whole bass and drum machine era... I've heard a few folks claim this as the original boom bap song, as opposed to "Sucka Mc's"... it actually sounds like the origins of alot of the south style music today.... tell me what y'all think?

when it comes to the sound of boom bap I don't think of a particular producer or group of producers... I think about the particular song. Although Premier made a lot of boom bap style beats, he also made a few beats that aren't. I would never limit a world class producer like that. I'm pretty sure most of us in this forum could make more than just one style of beat whether we wanted to or not. It just seems that if someone like Easy Mo produced "grindin" then some would say it was boom bap based on that. just wanna make sure that we're clear in regards to classifying the song as boom bap, not the producer.
now let me ask for some opinion here: Do you think boom bap is limited to the NY brand of boom bap where the drums are grimey? Or can it be expanded to different sounding drums as long as it sticks to the boom bap formula?
