Not one??? You straight buggin'!

Better than close, "Classic"

nope not one... let me re-phrase... no producers are strictly boom bap.
I wouldn't put limits or labels on a dope producer like Premier. I'm sure he could make just about any style of beat if he wanted to. "Positivity" on Gang Starrs 1st LP is an example, not a boom bap style there.

By now I'm sure were all familiar with the early boom bap classics... Now I think the root of the discussion is based on an argument thats been going on for years.....

Sucka MC's(1983) vs. It's Yours(1981)

which one is boom bap? which one is not? or are they both boom bap? you tell me.....

what sparked this whole discussion is when I said 'for something newer check for grindin'... key word: newer... I didn't say grindin was like that ol' boom bap... but something newer that spawned from the original boom bap style... Personally I thought that joint was an attempt to create a unique boom bap sound, but sticking to the basic formula....

of course I'd rather listen to some Premier, or anyone else who produced a song on the Return of the Boom Bap album. so let me retract fom acting like an old hip hop know it all, cuz I used to hate when the OG cats portrayed themselves like that back in the day... I had my opnion back then... except they was right more times than not.

21 seconds of sample chopped boom bap

^^ drums was def not hittin', weak ass guitar melody too, just cuz you chop something don't mean its Boom Bap...

Boom Bap has def been lost in translation over the years... just like Pimpin' (nowdays if you have more than one girl all of a sudden your a Pimp... puleez) or like ballin' (you got a bonus check from work or momz gave you more allowance and all of a sudden your ballin'... puleez)

ya see once upon a time a long time ago... people rapped over mostly disco breaks... then along came RUN DMC... and with the help of Russell Simmons and Rick Ruben they created a beat stripped down to the bone with nothing but loud ass drums... the hip hop world named that baby "Boom Bap"... Now the baby Boom Bap, who is grown up and filled with many different sounds produces yet another child from a different mother.... some still denied his relation to his father Boom Bap... yet others who knew his father saw that he had the same essence as his dad. Loud drums... drums is all u heard from his dad... drums I say... Drums that knock like old school knockin' contests where all you had was your hand and a wall... Although, he was one of MANY children he still was directly releated... they called him Boom "Grindin" Bap.

some understood, some didn't... it would have to take someone like Rick Ruben to explain this same story for them to believe....

the end.... peace....

hate to say it but IMO your credibility is hurting based on several previous posts -- "grinding" will never be boom bap, it's not in the mix it's in the composition - by your logic if you take the "hit" out of a traditional boom bap dj premier song it ceases to be boom bap.

correct me if I'm wrong but it seems your basis for boom bap overlooks the historical significance of the first boom bap song ever "sucka mc's"....
even KRS - 1 speaks of this song as an inspiration for his Return of the Boom Bap album... in an era of mostly disco breaks, this song stood alone because it was drums only... "Grindin" = pretty much drums only.

of course as time went on producers added chopped up samples to these drums.... and yes drum programming and composition is important, but it is NOT the defining characteristic of that ol' boom bap as defined by "sucka mc's"

I wouldn't expect you to agree with me, because that era may have been too far removed from the start of your hip hop life...

nah actually that's a sample from a world music song - putamayo presents "french cafe" Georges Brassens - 05 - Je M'Suis Fait Tout Petit

sampled from wav right off the cd, no record...i will have to noise it up somehow probably. this is just a direct internally sampled mp3 - i only really have a four bar loop of it going on with it right now.

off topic now but i downpitched it all 1 semitone, shattered the sample into individual notes and reordered it...i should up the original. it's a useful sample, one of those chopable ones that almost anyone could use and get something completely different out of. funny, though - the original sample doesn't loop well and probably wouldn't make an incredible phrase as is.

Holding note repeat on one sound to make the track bang.

???
how the hell does holding note repeat on one sound make "the track bang?"
sounds like easy was speaking to a layman...

what I take from it is that, boom bap is boom bap. some people act like you have to get all complex or do more than you need to. All you need is some nice drums and your good to go. It doesnt matter if you quantize or dont quantize. ya know. Its about the sound, not anything else...........I could be wrong or overthinging it?! but i still think what im sayin is true.

its about the way it feels, its simplicity, its knock..........it is what it is type of shit.

oh absolutely, i agree with that

i just didn't understand how holding note repeat makes anything "bang," the word itself is suspect just like "warm" because it's so often echoed by someone who doesn't really know what they're looking for...know what i mean? simplicity is one thing, like a steady 8th note high hat which can be triggered w/ a note repeat...sounds great in the right setting. no need to clutter things (which i'm guilty of MANY MANY TIMES). sometimes all you need is tick tick tick tick

however, that doesn't make ANYTHING "bang" as i understand the word.

"bang" depends on quality of sound and mastering--the actual frequency of the note, not in note placement/drum programming relative to other notes... see what i'm saying?
