Expanding MIDI Inputs & Outputs

Hi. I have my two MIDI ins and outs connected to devices in my studio. Can I expand my MIDI ins and outs so that i can connect more than 2 devices at one time?

or use midi thru... if you have it that is., if your not using all 16 channels you can pass some thru to another peice of kit.

I only have 2 ins and 2 outs. I would like to be able to split some of the channels?

Is this the only way i can use more than 2 midi devices with the MPC 2000xl?

If your devices do not have midi thrus, then you need a MIDI splitter or patchbay. These will come in handy if you have a lot of hardware, so definately grab one. You can get old school midi patchbays used for pretty cheap off ebay. Otherwise, you can use the newer more expensive USB midi interfaces or try to find a 1 in, 4 out splitter.

Hi. Can you split midi signals to different pieces of equipment? eg. use 1-8 on port B to go to one thing and 9-16 on port B to go to another as midi channel 1-8 or 9-16?

Can you suggest what you mean by midi patchbay/splitter. Are there any ones you can suggest?

MIDI gear will only respond to the channel its set to. So you could run up to 16 pieces of gear off one MIDI output. The devices just throw out the other information. Therefore, there is no need to split the cable into different channels. A splitter will simply send the signals to all devices, you just need to make sure each piece is set to its own MIDI channel.

I've bought patchbays and spitters used as they are a bit overpriced for what they do, but you can still find them new. I don't know if they make plain midi patchbays anymore, usually you have to buy a 8x8 midi interface for your computer, but they also have the ability to work as a patchbay too.
