Tape saturation does wonders on drums. Make them stick together, so to speak.

i'm not familiar w/ the 1880 (btw, how much are you looking to spend on the unit? how many tracks?)
but, i use a VS.2400, it's a 24 track (which maybe more than you need?) but i can tell you it is a superior product.
the Roland VS units are more or less specialized computers for recording music, so i can't submit to the software argument. the VS s use software and specialized hardware, which happens to integrate most of the neccessary tools for recording music. it eliminates issues like latency, soundcard problems, and most importantly $$$. i dropped $2300 on the 2400, but i didn't need a PC, mixer, FX unit, etc. i know it's only 24 tracks and software can have up to a ish load of tracks, but that depends on your PC and is more than 24 tracks really neccessary.
the Roland VS series are excellent products and i'd recommend them to anybody.
