this is not really a tip but a workflow explanation that i want to discuss with yall

i live in grid edit while programming, it's my home. 16 pad (6 soon, if my next project goes well). i love it. i've gotten reallly fast in there, to the point of making people uncomfortable when they watch me. "you look feverish," said one guy.

one detractor of grid edit however (and this is one, after a MILLION benefits) is that you can only see 1 pad bank at a time, ie A or B or C or D. this has caused me to program everything within 1 pad bank mostly, so i can see where it is and where everything else is.

in some ways this is a pain, because i need to fit all my sounds on 16 pads. in another way, this is AWESOME because it's opened up Qlink Layers to me and now i use that in almost every program i make. Invariably for drums.

anyway, i primarily use B-D for simult layers to add onto things. for example, say i make a pgm of a sample that has 64 chops in it. i put them all on pad bank A, layers 1 thru 4 on each pad. i program my melody, swapping between layers via qlink. now, say i decide that i like how the sample sounds if you tune it down X amount - instead of copying the program and track like i used to do, i'll just copy each pad to pad bank B and tune them down there. then i simult them to A. then you can do some really funky things with qlinks - set a filter to B but not A, throw a realtime track filter qlink over everything and fade it in and out to give your initial sample even more texture....it sounds really cool

so now that i've mentioned this i want you to talk about it too - what do you do? what ideas do my techniques prompt in your head? what do you wish you could do but don't see a way to?

I think i'm gonna play around in grid edit 16 pad mode tonight.. programming my drums and after that going to try to use the q link swing and q link shift on my drums.. normally i just do my snare with TC on and kick and hat with TC off.. but i'm going to check if this is going to improve my workflow.. i'll let you know!

Hmm that layer swapping technique and using every chop on pad bank A sounds like it's taking some time.. because i'm a fast worker i like to chop my sample in trim, then assign it to a new program.. i do this for every different sample i chop, drums got their own pgm, bass pgm and mostly i like to copy a pgm from my main sample to tune the sample an octave up or down for additions in my main melody(tuning it an octave up will really help you filling up your beats if you put it on low velocity.. you can add really nice little background sounds)

I really need to mess around more with this q-link stuff(i honestly don't know exactly what you main with the swapping layer technique with q-link).. i mainly just love the global program and grid edit.. i think i use global program edit the most with whole on whily editing the tuning/filter/velocity/fx/etc values..

one detractor of grid edit however (and this is one, after a MILLION benefits) is that you can only see 1 pad bank at a time, ie A or B or C or D. this has caused me to program everything within 1 pad bank mostly, so i can see where it is and where everything else is.

that's why i think it's maybe better just to use different PGM's for drums/sample/bass etc.. for most off the PGM's i just use bank A except for bass wich are autochromatic tuned or played with the direct record mode from a vsti from my pc..

funniest thing is sometimes when i read your post nym i get excited to mess around more with my mpc because most of the time i'm focussed on a result, and i want an result really fast, and sometimes just too fast.. wich makes a beat sometimes sloppy..

interesting work flow Antonym, but it does sound pretty cumbersome to me, but sounds like it's really working for you. :)

I've mentioned this before, but I like chopping my samples with the qLink set to start time. So I can have a program with a bunch of long samples, and then use the qLink to specify when the sample starts, record/bang, then use the after button to refine it, or change the start point by setting the qLink with the after button pressed, and then while in record, trigger the after button for the part of the sequence that I wan't the start point to change.

And now that we have 99 programs, I like to make lots of copies of a program and global edit them so I'll have one with a fast attack, one with a slow release, change up filters etc.

Still haven't really gotten into grid mode. I just find it slow and awkward.
