Problem with RAM install

hey guys, i tried to install a PC133 SODIMM 128MB ram for my MPC yesterday and it didn't work. It obviously fit into the card slot. but when i powered it on it ran through this RAM BANK Check and checkd and passed banks 1, 2, and 3. When it got to the 4th bank it failed after going about 80% through and it said there was a problem in 8800000 or sum shiet of the RAM??

just for good measure, i bought another 128MB RAM card, SODIMM, PC133 notebook ram from another place and it said the same thing. so i took both cards to my homies pad and tried to install them onto his MPC 1K and i got the same problem.

the only conclusion i can draw from this is that the RAM must be 256MB and nothing less? can this be true? i figured that if i was only able to get my hands on a 128MB (just cuz one was free from an old laptop and the other was only like 15buks from computer shop) then i'd be able to get like 64MB of RAM on my MPC since it only sees half of the RAM. is this true?? only thing else i can try is to get the 256MB. but i cant see why it can't just read less RAM?

you've got all your facts straight, that is it sounds like you've done some research.
i dont know what the problem is, but if i have any suggestion it's just to get one of the model RAM listed in the sticky you've seen. get one someone vouches for.

yeah man, i don't get it. but has anyone tried to install LESS THAN the 256MB? i'm wonderin if thats the problem...

I've heard of people using less and it worked. I just installed 256mb but the first time it didn't work. I bought exactly what everyone said to buy and it just failed. Came up with the same error yours has. I called the people I bought it from and they replaced with something 'slightly different' and it worked.

In the end I don't really know what the problem was but I would suggest that if you are buying it from a shop, to take it back and take your MPC with you. See if they have another brand you can try on the spot. Because I don't think it is an issue with the amount 128, 256 etc but with the actual chip.

If it helps, the first one I had looked like it had four chips on it and the second one that worked looked like it had eight half size chips. (Thats probably the wrong terminology but the little black rectangles on the ram)

But yeah, like Antonym said, getting a brand like Kingston that is mentioned in the sticky thread about ram. The issue I had with that is I found it really hard to find this type of RAM in Australia, let alone have options for brands.
